NEW ALBANY — A Sellersburg man faces one felony and two misdemeanor charges following a two-hour standoff with police Tuesday night.
John D. Pyle, 27, appeared in Floyd County Superior Court No. 1 on Wednesday to answer to charges of class D felony residential entry, class A misdemeanor invasion of privacy and class B misdemeanor criminal mischief. An automatic not guilty plea was entered for Pyle. Bond was set at $100,000 court cash or surety, and a public defender was appointed.
Tuesday morning, Floyd County Sheriff’s Department deputies had delivered a protective order, notifying Pyle that he was not to have any further contact with his father, David, and that he was not to return to their home in the 3200 block of Magnolia Court.
Officers left the documents on the front door because Pyle was not home. When he returned home later in the day, Pyle reportedly tore up the documents and broke into the home.
According to an affidavit for probable cause, Pyle kicked in the rear garage service door. His father showed police where his son had ripped the door off the oven and shattered the glass on the floor.
He reportedly attempted to kick his father in the groin but missed. Police were called, and his father left the house. Pyle refused to exit the home, and police were concerned due to family saying there were numerous firearms in the home.
The SWAT team was called to the scene, but Pyle surrendered peacefully after talking to a negotiator. A judge ordered a psychological evaluation before Pyle is released. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 13. He faces six months to 4 1⁄2 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
