NEW ALBANY —
In honor of Memorial Day, the city of New Albany will show the movie “Top Gun” on its new 40-foot screen at the Riverfront Amphitheater Saturday.
The movie will begin at dark, and the event is free to attend. There will be activities for kids, food vendors and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase.
“This is a great event to bring your kids to,” said Michael Hall, head of city operations.
He talked about how the atmosphere will be family friendly, and that the city hopes to hold regular movie nights at the amphitheater if private fundraising will support it.
Fundraising “is going well so far, and if it continues to go well, we’ll have a series of these this summer,” Hall said.
The Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County and Duke Energy have been the top donors so far, he said. The 40-foot screen that will project the movies has been paid for through private donations, Hall continued.
He said Mayor Jeff Gahan considers the events a quality-of-life initiative. Another series under the umbrella of the city’s downtown entertainment package is slated to begin next week.
On June 1, the Live@5 summer concert series will launch with a performance by The Rumors. The shows will begin each Friday at 5 p.m. at varying downtown venues through Aug. 31.
The Rumors will be performing on a stage that will be assembled at the intersection of Market and State streets next week. The intersection will be closed during the event, which is expected to last until about 8 p.m.
The city is urging those who attend to use the State Street parking garage instead of parking in the downtown Farmer’s Market lot. Hall said that lot is typically used by people who are coming to New Albany to shop or eat, and “we want to keep that open for them.”
The intersection will likely close at about 2 p.m. in order for the stage to be setup, Hall said. The following Friday, the group Smokin Joe will perform, though the venue hasn’t been announced for that event.
As for the showing of “Top Gun,” Hall said people can bring picnic baskets with food and drinks but that no alcoholic beverages will be permitted. For more information, visit the website www.cityofnewalbany.com.
