Preservation League to hold meeting Tuesday
The Historic Preservation League of New Albany-Floyd County will hold its August meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the historic 1884 Division Street School classroom in New Albany [one block south of East Spring and E. 18th]. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss preservation advocacy initiatives being considered in Georgetown Township and updates on the Lewis log house save effort, Floyd County Cemetery Clean-up Initiative Site Evaluations, reports on brochure and logo designs and others.

Seventh Day Adventist hosts health seminar
The Seventh Day Adventist Church will host a weekend health seminar, “A Second Opinion on Health,” presented by naturopathic expert Dr. Donald Miller, beginning at 7 p.m., Aug. 6, at the church, 1101 Silver St., New Albany.
Dr. Miller will speak on the following topics:
Aug. 6
7 p.m., “The Basic Laws of Health”
Aug. 7
11:30 a.m., “A Living Sacrifice,” followed by a vegetarian lunch
2:30 p.m., “The Crown of the Brain”
7 p.m., “Defeating the Leading Cause of Disease”
Aug. 8
10 a.m., “Simple Remedies for Common Problems,” followed by a vegetarian lunch.
The event is free and open to the public.

NAHS class of 1948 reunion
The New Albany High School class of 1948 will host its reunion at noon Aug. 20 at the Holiday Inn Lakeview in Clarksville.
Attendees will pay for a buffet meal at their table.

Hosparus needs volunteers and offers training
Hosparus-Southern Indiana needs volunteers who live in Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Scott and Washington counties and will offer free volunteer training from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 7, at its New Albany office, 624 E. Market St., New Albany, with lunch included.
Volunteers help with administrative duties, bereavement care, patient and family care, thrift shop coverage, respite and development/fundraising. Shop volunteers work the cash register, handle inventory and greet customers.
Hosparus carefully selects volunteers and provides them with comprehensive training specially designed to meet the needs of hospice patients and families. Hosparus volunteers must have available transportation and complete training and an application process.

Bennett hosting meetings on school standards
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett invites Indiana’s educators to join him for the first “Superintendent’s Season Opener: News You Can Use for the 2010-11 School Year,” being held in communities across the state, including from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Scribner Middle School Auditorium, 910 Old Vincennes Road, New Albany.
Bennett and a team of representatives from the Indiana Department of Education will be available during these two-hour sessions to discuss and answer questions regarding Indiana’s growth model; common core standards; A-F school grading; teacher evaluations; reading framework; curriculum mapping; and Rules for Educator Preparation and Accountability.
