Grant Line Road in New Albany to close at railroad crossing for at least a week

CSX installing new crossing surface on busy roadway

NEW ALBANY — The good news is that the bumpy railroad crossing on Grant Line Road will be resurfaced, the bad news is that the work will require the street to be closed for a minimum of one week.

The road will be closed at the crossing — which is located near Pillsbury Lane south of University Woods Drive — as early as June 11, depending on when materials are delivered for the project. CSX Railroad Corp. owns the tracks, and will be installing a new crossing surface in conjunction with the improvement project occurring along Grant Line Road from McDonald Lane to Mount Tabor Road.

City officials said that the estimated length of time for the construction is one week, but that the “goal is to complete the work sooner.”

CSX is expected to notify the city by Tuesday of the exact closing schedule for the project. With the closure, motorists can access Green Valley Road and Charlestown Road for uninterrupted travel. Green Valley Road is accessible via Mount Tabor Road from Grant Line, and Charlestown Road can be reached by using McDonald Lane.

When the state was in charge of the improvement project, there were plans to build an overpass to carry traffic over the railroad tracks on Grant Line Road. But due to multiple reasons including cost, that idea was scrapped after the state paid the city to take over maintenance of about a 4.5 mile section of Ind. 111.

As the rest of the project continues, other portions of Grant Line Road remain affected, including the closure of the left turning lane at the University Woods Drive intersection.
