LEAVENWORTH —
A body discovered Sunday afternoon in a cave near Leavenworth has been officially identified as 25-year-old Kevin Eve, of Georgetown.
Crawford County Coroner Chris Brown said he agreed with the pathologist’s finding that Eve died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a statement released Tuesday morning by the Department of Natural Resources.
Eve, a veteran of the war in Iraq and avid cave explorer, was last seen Oct. 1 in Corydon. His vehicle was found two days later in the Harrison-Crawford State Forest.
Emergency workers and volunteers searched hundreds of acres of wilderness and dozens of caves before suspending their search Oct. 23.
A group of college students exploring the Breathing Hole Cave found the body Sunday afternoon and contacted police. Rescue workers had to climb through narrow passages and down a 154-foot drop to recover the body.
The caves are closed to stop the spread of “white-nose syndrome” — a fungal disease that kills bats. Conservation Officer Jeff Milner said detectives interviewed the individuals who discovered the body, but for now, no charges are expected for illegally entering the cave.
