With many schools corporations already struggling financially prior to the state announcing further cuts in funding, one local school board member decided to do something about it.
“It put a sense of urgency in me,” said Lee Ann Wiseheart, vice president of the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. board. “It made me think of what could we do to help? I wanted to do something that would engage the community and create a sense of urgency that we are all in this together.”
So, she has organized a Valentine’s Day dinner, held a day early on Feb. 13, at Wooded Glen Retreat and Conference Center, in Henryville. Tickets for the event, dubbed Wise Hearts 4 Kids, are $25 per person, with $15 of that going to a local school corporation of that person’s choice. The rest goes to cover the cost of the meal, Wiseheart said.
“I was looking at my schedule and that was about the only weekend I had available,” Wiseheart explained as to how she came up with the date. “Everyone is asking for money, so I thought, why not a dinner? Everyone goes out for dinner for Valentine’s Day and I thought we could offer a nice dinner at a reasonable price and it wouldn’t be a hard sell.”
Only 50 tickets have been sold so far out of the 300 available, she said. Wiseheart said she’s hoping to sell a lot more, but there is another goal that’s more important.
“It’s just as important to raise awareness as finances,” she said. “I believe that the communities need to be involved in their schools, both financially and physically be involved, engaged and know their schools.”
Wiseheart said she’d be more than happy to continue hosting events such as this to raise more money for schools in the future, if that’s what it takes.
Tickets for the event can be purchased at Lavender Sentiments off Charlestown Road in New Albany and at Chick-fil-A off Veterans Parkway in Clarksville.
The dinner is from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wooded Glen, located at 2602 Hebron Church Road, in Henryville.
