FCARL hosts pirate-themed Red Hot Pet Lovers Gala
Avast ye maties, the Floyd County Animal Rescue League (FCARL) will host their fourth annual Red Hot Pet Lovers Gala at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Horseshoe Casino & Hotel Conference Center, Elizabeth.
This year’s event will be pirate-themed and will include a buffet style dinner, DJ, silent auction, treasure hunt, games and contests — all to raise money for the homeless animals of Floyd County. Attendants should dress in their best pirate attire and practice their pirate lingo to enter one of the contests for a chance to win treasure. Those who do not wish to dress up are also welcome.
To purchase tickets in advance, visit the New Albany Animal Shelter, 215 West Market St., by Jan. 29, or purchase tickets at the Green Tree Mall Pet Adoption Center next to Dillard’s in the Mall or mail your ticket request along with payment in the form of a check or money order, made payable to “FCARL”, as well as a self-addressed stamped envelope to: FCARL, P.O. Box 285, New Albany, 47151.
Ticket prices are $35 each or a table of 10 for $300.

Child’s Heart Daycare and Purdue Extension host Child Nutrition class
Child’s Heart Daycare and Preschool and Purdue Extension are hosting a class for parents who want to learn about the dietary needs of their child from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at the daycare, 6901 Old Vincennes Road, Floyds Knobs, inside the Heartland Church of the Nazarene.
The class will help parents to set healthy, realistic goals and expectations for meals and snacks. Participants will receive handout materials, including some new recipes for children.
Cost is $3 per person for materials.

Dr. Tony Bennett speaking at Fifteenth Annual MLK Luncheon
The New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation and the New Albany-Floyd County Education Association will host the Fifteenth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 15, at Northside Christian Church, 4407 Charlestown Road, New Albany.
Keynote speaker will be Dr. Tony Bennett, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. There will be a performance of the Scribner Middle School’s Eighth Grade Choir. Tickets must be purchased in advance, no later than Jan. 8.
Cost is $10 per ticket.

Holy Family presents ‘Lines of Communication’
The Holy Family Theatre Group presents their 26th annual stage performance, “Lines of Communication,” at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15, family night, and Jan. 16, for 21 and older, in Marchino Hall at Holy Family Catholic Church, 129 West Daisy Lane, New Albany.

United Way offers Asset Building program to new parents
Metro United Way is offering, “Asset Building,” to help new parents set goals and shape family life from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Paris Health Education Center, classroom four, 1850 State St., New Albany.
Shaping your child’s attitudes, experiences and behaviors begins on day one. Learn the simple, and basically cost-free ways that will help you as new parents set basic goals against which you make decisions and shape family life. Asset building can help parents be intentional about their choices, knowing that what they do can have a tremendously positive impact in providing protective factors as your child grows. The presenter is Barbara Bridgwater, Community Youth Champion, Youth Count.
The course is free and registration must be made by 48 hours prior to workshop.
