NAPD: Woman was in her 40s or 50; autopsy set for today

NEW ALBANY — Floyd County Coroner Leslie Knable said the body of woman found on the banks of the Ohio River Friday morning shows no signs of apparent foul play.

Knable said it appeared woman had lost her life in the last week.

“She is not decomposed at all, but with the water temperature being cold, it [her death] could have occurred anywhere in the past week to a day,” she said, adding that further investigation is continuing to better determine the approximate time of death.

Knable said she expects to confirm the woman’s identity Saturday. She said an autopsy in Jefferson County has also been scheduled for Saturday.

Knable examined the body about 12:30 p.m. Friday, nearly two hours after it was found by a barge crew passing by. She said the body was partially dressed with no marks that lead investigators to believe she was the victim of an assault or involved in an accident.

Knable had to be taken to the body by a water craft belonging to the New Albany Fire Department.

The body was identified by the New Albany Police Department as a white woman approximately in her late 40s to early 50s.

Police said the body was found on the river bank near QRS Recycling at 1001 Floyd St. Officers said the body was stable on the shore when police arrived.
