Pfc. William H. Garner IV hit in neck with shrapnel
A militant attack in Afghanistan has seriously injured a Floyds Knobs
soldier, his family said Thursday.
Shrapnel from an explosive device struck Pfc. William H. Garner IV, 24, in
the neck and leg, his mother, Ann, said. From conversations with the Red
Cross and the Army, she believes he is being treated in a Kandahar, Afghanistan, hospital. Garner's uncle James, New Albany's mayor, said Garner has improved from critical to serious condition.
"We know he's OK, we know he's alive," Ann Garner said. "I'm just praying a lot."
Garner joined the Army in December, trained at Fort Drum, N.Y., and deployed to Afghanistan Feb. 17. A 2000 Trinity High School graduate, he is the oldest of Ann and William H. Garner III's three children. Garner is engaged to Carrie Meredith of Georgetown and has a 2-year-old son, Quentin.
