Man hit by truck while changing battery along interstate

I-64 closed for hours in Floyd County

A Lanesville man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a semi tractor-trailer while changing the battery to his vehicle, Indiana State Police Trooper Dave Scott said.

Ronald Stewart, 65, was transported by Yellow Ambulance to University Hospital in Louisville. The accident occurred near the Georgetown exit, 118, of Interstate 64 at 2:38 p.m. According to an ISP press release, a westbound Mack truck being driven by Garland S. Cope, 25, of Scottsburg, crossed into the emergency lane and struck a Silver Hyundai Sonata.

Stewart was changing the battery of a green Chrysler Caravan, which was parked directly in front of the Sonata in the emergency lane of the highway. The Sonata was pushed into the Caravan. Floyd County Detective Capt. Jeff Topping said Stewart appeared to have been dragged almost 200 feet.

Topping said a family member told him that Stewart was conscious and alert at the hospital.

Cope and the passenger in the Sonata, John Stewart, of Lanesville, refused medical treatment.

Eastbound and westbound lanes were closed, and I-64 westbound will be closed until about 8 p.m. Sunday during the investigation and cleanup. Traffic was routed to U.S. 150.
