New Albany Police Department continues to charge $3 for incident reports
Three police departments in Clark Co. quit charging
Three area police departments have stopped charging for copies of incident reports. The change came after an article published in The Tribune and The Evening News on May 24 reported that four police departments charged more than the 10 cents per page allowed under Indiana Code.
The New Albany Police Department continues to charge $3 per incident report, according to its records department.
The Jeffersonville and Clarksville police departments had charged $5 per report, while the Clark County Sheriff’s Department charged 50 cents per page. All three agencies dropped the charges shortly after the article’s publication.
Amy Miller, assistant to the Indiana public access counselor, said that incident reports fall under the same state statute that limits how much agencies can charge for copies of any documents.
There are some exceptions to the law that only allows government agencies to charge 10 cents per page for copies of public documents. For instance, police departments can charge $5 or more for copies of accident reports.
The Charlestown and Sellersburg police departments and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department all reported prior to the article’s publication that they did not charge for incident reports.
When asked if NAPD had looked into lowering its fees to come into compliance with state regulations, Chief Greg Crabtree said he would have to talk to Maj. Sherri Knight and the city’s attorney, Shane Gibson, to check. Knight, who was not available for comment, had previously said they would lower their fees if the state mandated it.
A message left for Gibson was not returned on Monday.
