A New Albany man was arrested for theft and burglary after allegedly crashing into a Greenville Sav-A-Step store and stealing an automatic teller machine.
Jonathon E. Clubb, 45, is being held in the Floyd County Jail awaiting formal charges to be filed.
The alleged burglary occurred at 3:14 a.m. Wednesday. Surveillance video showed two men in a Chevrolet pickup truck drive in reverse through the front of the store and strike the ATM.
They loaded it on the back of the truck and left the scene. A passing motorist called 911 when he saw the truck leave the store at a high rate of speed.
Floyd County Sheriff’s Department Officer Phil Davis was off duty and driving along Grant Line Road late Friday night with his family in his police car.
“The suspect’s vehicle pulled out in front of him, right in front of him, almost hit him,” sheriff’s department Detective Capt. Jeff Topping said.
Davis saw the truck had damage to its tail light and no license plate and immediately suspected it was the truck used in the Sav-A-Step burglary. He followed the truck as it pulled into a parking lot, but eventually ran into a dead end.
The driver of the vehicle was Vincent Findley, 45, of Louisville. He denied involvement in stealing the ATM, but was arrested because he is wanted on a warrant out of Kentucky.
Clubb, the passenger, was wanted on five warrants out of Floyd County, Topping said. His pending charges include theft and battery resulting in bodily injury. Topping said he confessed to the burglary and admitted they took the money out of the machine and then dumped the ATM in a river.
“It was good police work, and the take-home policy paid off,” Topping said, referring to the rule allowing officers to use their police vehicles while off-duty.
Police are still following up on leads and searching for the second suspect in the ATM burglary. Police initially thought Findley was a suspect, but they did not have enough information to charge him.
