Section of State Street collapses

A section of the road along the 1100 block of State Street collapsed around 5 p.m. Friday. The hole was near the side of the street, which allowed traffic to pass with caution. The cause has not yet been determined.

IUS honors veterans today

The newly reformed Indiana University Southeast Student Veterans Organization and several IUS musical, theater, and art groups will honor our nation’s veterans with a program titled “Living as a Patriot,” at 2 p.m. today in the Stem Concert Hall at the Ogle Center. The program includes music from the Commonwealth Brass Band and the IUS Concert Choir. Students from the IUS Communication Department will showcase reader’s theatre presentations, and students from the fine arts program will display computer graphics. The program is free and open to the public.

Stormwater management workshops offered

The Southern Indiana Stormwater Advisory Committee will sponsor two sessions of a municipal employee training workshop focusing on stormwater best management practices for municipal operations from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and again from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Nolan Fieldhouse, 5010 Progress Way, Sellersburg.

The sessions are designed to assist employees and stormwater coordinators with compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Stormwater Permit. It includes training necessary to detect and eliminate inappropriate discharges to stormwater systems and to operate municipal facilities as required by the stormwater permit.

The workshops will address day-to-day municipal activities, including good housekeeping practices, leaf and debris collection, storm-drain cleaning, winter road sale applications and others that impact stormwater quality.

The Stormwater Advisory Committee includes Floyd and Clark counties and some of its municipalities. Call Stantec Consulting Services Inc. at 812-285-4060 for more information.

Salvation Army offering Christmas assistance

The Salvation Army will be taking applications for Christmas assistance (food, clothing, toys), from residents in Floyd, Clark, Scott, Washington and Crawford counties, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning Nov. 2 through Nov. 20, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 21, at their office, 2300 Green Valley Road, New Albany.

Those applying will need to bring: proof of rent (copy of lease with all family members listed); proof of all income (TANF, food stamps, disability, employment, unemployment, child support); proof of address (utility bill); ID on each person in the household (Indiana ID for adults and Social Security cards for children); proof of date of birth on all children (birth certificates); and clothing sizes for all children through age 16.

Harrison County residents can apply for the Angel Tree program (clothing) and for toys at Community of Hope Church of the Nazarene, 1500 Corydon Ramsey Road, Corydon, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 2 through 21. Call 812-738-8118 for more information on the Harrison County program.

Destinations Books hosts Desserich family signing ‘Notes Left Behind’

Destinations Booksellers will host the Desserich family, who lost their daughter and sister to a brain tumor, to sign their book, “Notes Left Behind,” at 5 p.m. today at the store, 604 East Spring St., New Albany.

The store is encouraging the public to attend this national book tour, so that publishers will continue to send national authors to New Albany as well as to hear the true story of this family. The Desserichs have found “hundreds of notes” tucked away throughout their home, written by their dying daughter stating her love for her family. The family has been featured on the Today Show. Refreshments will be served.

Carnegie offers sneak peek of ‘Carbon Nation’

The Carnegie Center for Art and History will present a free special sneak peek of scenes from “Carbon Nation,” an upcoming documentary on climate change, to the public from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Center, 201 East Spring St., New Albany, followed by a discussion by Producer/Director Peter Byck.
