New Albany and Purdue Research Park of Southern Indiana gained a multi-million dollar investment Monday with the announcement WindStream Technologies, Inc. will develop a production facility at the Charlestown Road location.
According to a news release, WindStream anticipates its facility will bring 260 jobs to New Albany by 2012.
“We are very excited about the opportunity of locating our operations in New Albany and the support Indiana has pledged to the company,” said Dan Bates, president and chief executive officer of WindStream.
The company — currently located in California — manufacturers wind turbines called TurboMills. It received an incentive package from the Indiana Economic Development Corp., or IEDC, worth up to $1.5 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $84,500 in training grants based on the amount of jobs WindStream plans to create.
“It was clear from our first discussions that Indiana is looking to become a leader in the green economy and WindStream is proud to be a part of that positive effort,” Bates said.
The Southern Indiana branch of the Purdue Research Park is connected to the largest university-affiliated business incubation facility in the country, with more than 160 companies and 725 acres of space in West Lafayette, Indianapolis, Merrillville and New Albany.
The park is owned and managed by the Purdue Research Foundation.
“We are excited about these jobs and very proud to welcome WindStream Technologies as our newest corporate citizen,” Mayor Doug England said.
“Attracting a cutting edge company such as this to New Albany is evidence that the Purdue Research Park of Southeast Indiana will play a critical role in this region’s future economic prosperity.”
Gov. Mitch Daniels created IEDC in 2005 to replace the former Indiana Department of Commerce. Kemper Foods International also received tax incentives from IEDC earlier this month to expand its operations in New Albany.
Combined, Kemper Foods and WindStream touted they will bring more than 600 jobs to New Albany by 2012.
“WindStream Technologies represents yet another win for Indiana’s growing renewable energy economy,” Daniels said. “We know the partnership created by WindStream and Purdue Research Park will result in new high-growth opportunities for Hoosiers.”
