Culbertson Mansion hosts Christmas Victorian Tea

The Culbertson Mansion State Historic Site’s Christmas Victorian Tea will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Mansion, 914 East Main St., New Albany.

This event, straight from the Victorian Era, will be held in the Formal Parlor of the Culbertson Mansion. Fresh fruit, finger sandwiches, cakes, pastries, cookies and a variety of teas will be served along with several other delicacies to enjoy. After dining, attendee’s will be escorted on a tour of the site of all three floors and the basement. A little Christmas shopping is available in the gift shop, at the conclusion of the tour.

Attendance to the tea is limited to the first 40 respondents. Advance payment and reservations are required. Proceeds benefit continuing restoration projects.

Admission is $18.

Library hosts Christmas book sale

The Friends of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library will host their inaugural Christmas Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dec. 5, in the Library’s Annex Building, 180 West Spring St., New Albany.

There will be holiday books, music, movies and more for young and old alike. Regular prices are $1 for hardbacks and videos; 50 cents for paperbacks and CD’s; 25 cents for cassette tapes; 10 cents for magazines; and five cents for vinyl records. Children’s books are available at prices of $1 or less.

Because of a recent large withdrawal from the library, the Friends can offer a limited selection of non-fiction children’s books free of charge.

Library offers Christmas music

The Corydon Dulcimer Society will be performing Christmas music from 7 to 8 p.m., Dec. 8, in the Strassweg Auditorium at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 180 West Spring St., New Albany.

The group plays a variety of string instruments, with the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer being the main focus. They play traditional music and feature some excellent singers on several songs. The group was formed in 1989. Call the Reference Services Desk at 812-949-3523 for more information.

DePauw UMC hosts tailgate dinner

DePauw Methodist Church will host a tailgate dinner from 5 to 7 p.m., Dec. 4, at the church, 925 Vincennes St., New Albany, across from New Albany High School.

The menu will include meatloaf, baked potato, peas, carrots, Jell-O salad, rolls, homemade dessert and drink.

Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.

Dancers hosting pancake breakfast

The All Star Dancers from Rainbow Dance Academy will hold a benefit all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast with Santa from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s in Clarksville. The money will help pay for a trip to the nationals in Cincinnati in February.

The cost is $5 and includes pancakes, milk, juice and soft drinks.

Volunteers needed for tax preparation

The Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition is seeking volunteers for the upcoming tax season.

The coalition provides free tax preparation for low-income individuals/families as well as financial education/coaching. Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of four hours a week from mid-January through April 15, with shifts in four-hour increments.

Hours vary at the different locations, but include openings on weeknights and Saturdays and are by appointment only. Volunteers are required to complete tax training prior to their commitment. No prior tax preparation experience is needed, as workers will be using tax software. Good communication skills and a friendly attitude to help those in need are expected.

DDP presents ‘A Wonderful Life’

Derby Dinner Playhouse will present the holiday musical “A Wonderful Life” running through Dec. 31.

The theatrical version of the Frank Capra film classic is under the direction of Lee Buckholz with choreography by Barbara F. Cullen. The show is set in 1945 and tells the story of George Bailey, whose financial woes cause him to wish he had never been born. Then a guardian angel arrives to show him what the outcome would be for those he knows if he had never been born.
