Man pleads guilty in bank robbery
Former mayoral candidate to be sentenced
A Louisville man is scheduled to be sentenced later this month after pleading guilty to robbing a Floyds Knobs bank.
John Lee Stephens, 44, was arrested March 25 following an armed robbery at Your Community Bank, at 701 Highlander Point Drive.
In September, Stephens pleaded guilty in the United States District Court in New Albany to armed bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, according to court records.
Stephens is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 22 by Judge Sarah Evans Barker. Stephens faces as many as 25 years in prison for the armed robbery, although prosecutors will recommend a lesser charge as part of the plea agreement. Prosecutors will also ask that Stephens be sentenced to an additional seven years for brandishing a firearm, the minimum required by law.
Stephens reportedly used his foot to push a bank employee to the ground and then threatened to kill people at the bank.
According to police, Stephens then led police on a chase through New Albany and a search that lasted about 11 hours. A Floyd County Sheriff’s Department detective broke his leg during the pursuit. Stephens was arrested a short time later in the woods near Two Mile Lane and Ind. 111.
Yvonne Kersey scheduled to plead guilty
Former New Albany mayoral candidate Yvonne Kersey is scheduled to plead guilty and be sentenced on Dec. 17 in Floyd County Circuit Court.
Kersey, 54, was arrested in February of 2008 after New Albany Police Department officers were invited by Kersey into her home to investigate a possible computer crime. The officers smelled burnt marijuana, and following a search, found more than 20 pounds of the drug.
Kersey was charged with class C felony dealing in marijuana, class A misdemeanor possession of marijuana and class D felonies of possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance.
Her attorney, Stephen Beardsley, was not immediately available to comment on what charges his client would be pleading guilty to.
Her husband, Frank Lucchese, was sentenced in October to 18 months in prison and six months of home incarceration after pleading guilty in the same case.
