Panels used to erect New Albany flood gate stolen

Estimated cost of panels is $9,000

Detectives from the New Albany Police Department’s criminal investigation division are investigating the theft of seven aluminum panels that are used during flood emergencies to close the floodwall at East 18th Street.

Director of Flood Control Ron Grangier said the panels, which are valued at about $9,000, were taken from the secured storage facility that is located within the floodwall on East 18th Street just south of Troy Street, according to a NAPD press release. The theft occurred over the weekend.

Several of the panels measure 5 feet by 6 feet and some measure 5 feet by 8 feet. It takes at least two men to lift them, said Graingier. Investigators suspect that the thieves will try and sell the panels as scrap metal.

Graingier said that he plans to order replacement panels as soon as possible and he will take the necessary steps to increase the security at the storage facility.

Anyone having information concerning the person or persons responsible for this theft are asked to contact the department’s crime line at 812-948-NAPD.
