Burglars breaking into Georgetown homes while residents sleep
A series of early morning residential burglaries this week has Floyd County police urging homeowners to take precautions and be on the look-out for suspicious behavior.
One burglary was reported Monday morning in the 1600 block of Miller Lane in Georgetown. On Tuesday, burglaries were reported in the 7400 block of Tandy Road in Lanesville and the 7100 block of Corydon Ridge Road in Georgetown. A homeowner in the 3000 block of Oak Valley Court in Georgetown called police on Tuesday to report a suspicious person outside a residence.
What concerns police the most about these burglaries is the apparent lack of fear by those committing them. All of the burglaries have occurred between 4 and 7:30 a.m., a time when most people are asleep or getting ready for work.
“Most burglars go out of their way to make sure no one is in the residence when they burglarize the home,” Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills said. “(These suspects) are not concerned about a confrontation with the homeowner.”
So far, most of the victims have been asleep or out of town when the break-ins have occurred, but there was at least one close call.
Mills said a man heard a noise outside his house, and his dog would not stop barking.
“He goes downstairs and he still thinks it’s something other than a burglary, so he pulls up the blinds and comes face to face with a man in a ski mask,” Mills said.
Mills said his officers are working “extremely hard” to track down the suspects, but he says the most important information could come from vigilant neighbors.
Police are also investigating some attempted burglaries on Tuesday night. Mills said two men were seen by police going into newly constructed homes. Those men have not yet been arrested as police continue to investigate. Mills said he does not believe those suspects were involved in the other burglaries.
