Anderson seeks NA-FC school board position

Jan Habermel Anderson has announced her candidacy for the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. Board of Trustees. School board candidates are elected in the May primary.

Anderson retired in 2000 after a 26-year career in the NA-FC School Corp. She began her teaching career at the former Lillian Emery where she taught for seven years before being transferred to Mount Tabor Elementary School. She taught six years at Mt. Tabor, and also spent four years as assistant principal at the school.

She served as principal at St. Mary of the Knobs for three years, and then became principal of St. Mary of the Knobs and Lafayette school for three additional years while preparing to consolidate both schools into the current Floyds Knobs Elementary. She was principal at Floyds Knobs until her retirement.

Anderson said her experience in both city and county schools would be an asset as a school board member. She also said her family always stressed respect for education and educators. Her brother and sister-in-law — Mick and Phyllis Neely — taught in the NA-FC School Corp. and her mother was secretary to three superintendents.

She is a lifelong resident of Floyd County and her and her late husband Ross have been active in the community. Her grandchildren are currently enrolled in the corporation.

Anderson said she is known for putting children first in her priorities for quality education and is eager to contribute to its success.
