NEW ALBANY —
Five people, including an infant, were taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services following a New Albany apartment fire Sunday morning.
The fire broke out at 8:35 a.m. at the Catherine Place Apartments in the 800 block of Catherine Place. The complex is made up of three buildings, and all four units in one of the buildings sustained smoke, fire and water damage.
New Albany Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Gadd said Engine 1 was the first to arrive at the fire, five minutes after it was called in, and managed to rescue the baby. One man jumped from a second floor apartment and likely suffered two broken ankles, according to NAFD Chief Matt Juliot.
Gadd said neighbors were trying to rescue residents by using extension ladders before the fire department arrived.
Gadd said investigators were at the scene and he did not want to speculate where the fire began. Neighbors said they heard firefighters say it began in the basement.
Rebecca Etheridge who lives in one of the apartments with family members, said she heard the hallway smoke detector going off, but at first didn’t think it was anything serious.
“I though someone may have been cooking,” she said.
A neighbor quickly banged on the door to make sure Etheridge and her family got out of the apartment.
While five people were transported to the hospital, several others were treated at the scene according to Gadd.
This is the second fire in the past year at the same building.
