BORDEN —
A search is ongoing after a suspect, allegedly caught in the act of burglarizing a Borden house, led police on a high-speed chase through several cities.
Borden Town Marshal Jerry Crotchett was driving along the 100 block of Brewer Drive when he noticed a vehicle parked in front of a residence at about 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday. It was a silver Cadillac, similar to one that had been used in a Clark County burglary last week.
“I didn’t think the car belonged there,” Crotchett said.
Crotchett said he knows the owner of the house, so he called him to ask if anyone should be there. He told him no one should be in the house.
“About that time, (the suspect) jumps into the car and takes off,” Crotchett said.
The pursuit continued westbound on Ind. 60. Police deployed stop sticks at Ind. 111, but they did not stop the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit continued into Sellersburg and then south on Ind. 311 into New Albany.
The Indiana State Police and Floyd County Sheriff’s Department picked up the pursuit as it crossed county lines. ISP eventually discontinued the pursuit.
“I was told it was called off because of the danger to the public. It was getting into a crowded area,” ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin said.
Floyd County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Jeff Topping said the vehicle used in the pursuit was located by an officer on Gutford Road. Police found a jewelry box and other evidence inside the vehicle that was seized by police.
Crotchett said Wednesday afternoon they know who the suspect is and will continue to search for him. They will also be seeking a warrant, he said. Police are not yet releasing any information about the suspect.
