BPW hosts presentation about former slave and Civil War veteran

In recognition of Black History Month, The Business & Professional Women of New Albany will host local historian, Vic Megenity, discussing the story of Lucy Higgins Nichols, a former slave and Civil War veteran, at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15, at the Carnegie Center for Art & History, 201 East Spring St., New Albany.

Nichols was a former slave who served as a nurse with the Indiana 23rd Regiment during the Civil War and is likely the only slave to have received a pension for her war-time service. She escaped and sought protection with the Regiment while they were encamped in Bolivar, Tenn., and remained with the Regiment through many well-known battles such as Vicksburg and Sherman’s March to the Sea. At their urging, she returned with them to New Albany after the War and became a much-admired citizen of our community. The Carnegie Center is presently developing an exhibit on Lucy.

Cost $10 per person and includes a light supper.

Contact Suellen Wilkinson at suellen@insightbb.com or 812-948-9844 by Feb. 12 for reservations and information.
