Art on the Parish Green is this weekend in New Albany

Festival features fine arts, crafts, music and food

NEW ALBANY — Crafts, art work and food as well as musical entertainment and local beer and wine are on tap this weekend for the annual Art on the Parish Green festival.

This marks the sixth year for the event, which will be Saturday and Sunday on the lawn of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, located at 1015 E. Main St. in downtown New Albany.

Art on the Parish Green originated as a fundraiser for the church’s Shepherd’s Kitchen initiative, which is a program that provides free food for the homeless and poor.

Proceeds from this year’s art show will go to benefit the Pack the Bus program, which aids Southern Indiana students by funding back-to-school supplies for those in need.

More than 50 local and regional artists will be displaying their works during the event, said Chris Denny, media chair for Art on the Parish Green.

Organizers have striven to make Art on the Parish Green “the signature event in New Albany for art.”

“Most of the artists, thankfully, are returning artists,” Denny said. “We’ve accommodated them in almost every way possible to make sure this is the event they want to come to.”

He added not just any artist is allowed to set up a booth during the festival.

“We’re a fine arts show so we’re kind of particular about what gets in the event,” Denny said.

Booths will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and music will continue for about two more hours after the vendors close, Denny said. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

“Sunday seems to be our biggest draw,” he said.

Local musicians varying in style from Bluegrass to covers of 1970s classics will perform on a stage donated by Jimmy’s Music Center over the two-day festival.

There will be activities for children including the YMCA Kids’ Art Place exhibit with face painting, crafts and arts projects. Amazon John will be in attendance on Sunday, which is also Family Day at the festival.

A Cinderella horse and carriage ride will also be available on both days of the event.

Area vendors will be selling food during the event, and Eat Your Heart Out Catering will be offering sandwiches, salads and treats. There will be a beer and wine garden with selections from the River City Winery and the New Albanian Brewing Co. during the festival.

Sponsors of the event include the Arts Council of Southern Indiana, the YMCA of Southern Indiana, Develop New Albany and the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County.
