New Albany VFW opens Internet Café

Soliders, family can stay in touch for free

While it is never easy to leave home even in service to their country, military personal can at least stay up to date with their loved ones in New Albany thanks to a new Internet Café.

The café, located at VFW Post 3281 along Market Street, was funded through a $5,000 donation from the city, $2,500 from the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County, $500 from Louisville resident Frank Mascagni and the donation of building services.

Gary Coomer Drywall, C & C Home Improvements owned by Paul Cotner and PC Building Materials donated the construction materials and helped convert the former storage closet into the café free of charge.

While VFW members and their families will have primary use of the café, its available to anyone in the community who wishes to contact an active soldier.

“It goes along with our motto,” said Bill Thien, chairman of National VFW Programs.

“We honor our dead by helping the living.”

Thien said VFW members kicked around the idea of starting the café for about a year. There’s three main computers inside the café and another one in a separate room to cater to private needs.

Soliders and their families will be able to see each other via cameras attached to the computers.

While the initial construction costs have been accounted for, Thien said the VFW will need additional donations to take care of future maintenance and upgrade expenses.
