CHARLESTOWN — With consistency rivaling that of only the U.S. Postal Service, the Class 3A No. 2 Charlestown Pirates rolled through wind and rain on their way to a 53-0 victory over the Providence Pioneers on Senior Night at Dutch Reis Field on Friday.

The Charlestown defense surrendered just 15 total yards and just a pair of first downs. The Pioneers managed just 12 rushing yards on 28 carries and completed just one of their seven passes for three yards.

“Our defense is one of the best ever at Charlestown,” coach Jason Hawkins, who celebrated his 50th win at the helm of the Pirates’ squad. “Our defense was just flying to the ball.”

The 8-0 Pirates posted 421 total yards of offense. They were led in rushing by Daniel with 6 carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns. The air game belonged to Daniel as well as he connected on 10 of 13 attempts for 252 yards and four touchdowns. The receiving was divided up between Odle’s 122 yards on six receptions, breaking the school career record for receiving yards. Stephen Grayon’s record of 1,404 yards on a season fell to Odle as he reached 1,496 yards by the end of the night. The remaining two receiving touchdowns went to Sexton, who accumulated 111 yards on 3 catches.

On the heels of a failed Providence drive, the prolific Charlestown offense took possession on the Pioneer 43. Just five plays later, Seth McCutchen drove the final yard for the opening score of the night, giving the Pirates a 7-0 lead with 8:23 remaining in the opening frame.

With the ball back in their hands, the Pioneers failed to move past their own 20 for the second time in as many possessions, forcing the second punt of the night. The kick gave the Pirates control on the Providence 33.

All Daniel and the Pirate offense needed was two plays to widen the lead. The drive, capped by a 27-yard connection from Daniel to Tyler Odle and Charlestown led 14-0 with 5:04 left in the first quarter. At this point, the Pirates had posted 14 points on half as many plays from scrimmage.

On the Pirates’ next drive, Daniel sprinted 41 yards on the first play to give the Pirates a 21-0 with 11:34 left in the second quarter.

A botched kick return pinned Providence on their own 1 and the dominating Pirate defense managed to push them back to the one-inch inch line for the fifth punt attempt of the night, originating from deep in their own end zone.

The return on the punt, a 35-yard run back by Wesley Sexton, was called back on a handful of flags. It was no obstacle to Daniel and crew as he connected with Odle on the next play with a 27 yard lob and a 28-0 lead with 8:31 left before the half.

Charlestown’s next drive, progressing through steady rain shower, was capped by a 32-yard run from Daniel with 5:05 left in the second quarter, giving Charlestown a 34-0 advantage.

Starting from their own 23 following Providence’s seventh consecutive punt, Daniel threw up a pass that was tipped by a Providence defender before the ball landed in the hands of Sexton for a 77-yard touchdown pass and the Pirates led 41-0 at the break.

The Pirates started the second half from the Pioneers 40  and worked steadily from there. The Pirates looked to have gone to the house on a 35 yard run from Daniel but saw it returned as a result of penalties, but Daniel and crew were not to be stopped, overcoming the penalty and getting back to the end zone. The score, a 10-yard connection from Daniel to Sexton, upped the lead to 47-0 with 8:54 left in the third frame.

The running clock was in effect as the Pioneers punted for the eighth time. The boot started the Pirates on the Providence 36. The position was close enough for another Pirate strike, this one ending with a 35 yard sprint from Ryan Wilkerson with a failed PAT from Daniel, widened the lead even more to 53-0 with 5:38 left in the third quarter.
