Providence selling semistate tickets

The Providence High School athletic department will be selling Class 2A semistate tickets from Tuesday, March 13 to Friday, March 16 in the school’s athletic office and main office.

Tickets can be purchased from 7:45 a.m.-3:45 p.m. from Tuesday, March 13 to Thursday, March 15 and from 7:45 a.m.-noon on Friday, March 16.

Providence will face Class 2A No. 1 Park Tudor in the second semistate game at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 17 at Southport Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The first semistate game will pit Edinburgh against Loogootee in the Class A semistate at 4 p.m.

Jeff’s O’Brien qualifies for state meet

Jeffersonville senior Shea O’Brien earned a trip to this coming Saturday’s IHSAA State Finals by finishing third in the balance beam in last Friday’s Columbus East Regional with a score of 8.825. The top six finishers in each event qualified for state, which will take place at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena in Muncie.

O’Brien placed second in the beam on Friday, March 2 in the Columbus East Sectional with a score of 9.000. O’Brien made the Academic All-State team this season.

Also at regional, the Red Devils’ Haley Fugate finished eighth in the vault with a score of 9.175 and 15th in the floor exercise with a 8.500. She finished fourth in both events at sectional.

Team Jeff wrestler wins state title this past weekend

Team Jeff Wrestler Club wrestler Matt Munoz captured Indiana State Wrestling Association Folkstyle state championship last weekend.

Munoz, a student at Bridgepoint Elementary School in Jeffersonville, won both of his matches by pin. 

It was Munoz’s second Folkstyle state title and his fourth consecutive state championship overall. Last year, Munoz became the first Team Jeff grappler to win the ISWA Triple Crown, which is comprised of the freestyle, Folkstyle and Greco-Roman state championships.

Creek qualifies three individuals, two relays for indoor state finals

This past weekend, the Silver Creek track teams qualified three individuals and two relay teams for the indoor state finals, which will be next Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.

For the Dragon girls, Rachel Clemons qualified for the 3,200-meter run in a time of 12:20.14. She also advanced to the state meet in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 8 1/2 inches. Teammate Emily Christman earned a trip to state in the shot put with a toss of 31-7 1/2.

On the boys’ side, Silver Creek’s Isaak Haas qualified for the 3,200 in 10:24.02. The Dragons’ 3,200 relay team of Haas, Jason Fruits, Drew Roberts and Morgan Davidson advanced to state in 9:09.04. Silver Creek’s distance medley relay team of Roberts, Fruits, Haas and Keaton Spitler also reached state in 11:42.07.

The Dragon girls’ 3,200 relay team of Clemons, Maggie Shields, Jessica Backherms and Mackenzie Crouch missed qualifying for state by three seconds.

This was an excellent start to the season for our track teams,” Silver Creek head coach Darrell Kingery said.

Forbis named GLVC Pitcher of the Week

Bellarmine junior and New Albany High School graduate Phil Forbis has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Forbis received the honor after earning his first victory of the season in a 12-1 home victory over Hillsdale last Sunday. In a starting role, Forbis pitched six innings, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Forbis currently has a 1-1 record with a 1.80 earned-run average and 16 strikeouts.
