Senior helps New Albany overcome 15-1 Olympian third quarter spurt

NEW ALBANY — Tanner Marcum scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the host New Albany pull out a 64-60 Hoosier Hills Conference overtime win over Columbus East on Saturday afternoon.

A big game from Marcum was necessary for New Albany (7-8, 3-2 HHC) to overcome a third quarter in which it had no field goals and scored only one point. Marcum led all scorers with 34 for her third 30-point effort in the past two weeks.

“A lot more people got involved this game. We all contributed to [the win],” Marcum said. “We’re so young. They finally put it all together this game. We grew up a little bit.”

The Bulldogs came out of the gate hot.

Jenna Shine sank all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt and New Albany found itself ahead 10-0 early in the first quarter.

However, the Olympians (7-7, 1-3) would not succumb so easily. They went on a 14-6 run to finish out the quarter only down by four, 18-14.

Mikala Lomax started the second quarter with three straight baskets  East took a two-point lead, 20-18. The lead was short-lived as Marcum drove for a layup to tie, then dished to Claire Hirsch for a layup on the next possession. The Bulldogs continued the run and led 31-22 at the half.

The third-quarter belonged to Columbus East.

Allyson Bunch pulled down an offensive rebound and went right back up for two and a foul. She made the free throw for three the old-fashioned way and the New Albany lead was cut to six. Bunch later hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to tie the game at 31-apiece. The Olympians continued to outpace the Bulldogs in the quarter, ended with a 15-1 run and a 37-32 advantage after three periods.

East pushed the lead to nine at 41-33 when New Albany Coach Tammy Geron called a timeout.

That’s when the Bulldogs began to get hot. Marcum made a 10-footer from the right side. A 3 from Shine then pulled New Albany within five at 43-38.

Shine hit two more 3-pointers in the next two minutes and New Albany found themselves right back in it, 48-48.

“Once we knock down a couple shots outside that frees up a lot of other things,” Geron said. “I thought those three [Shine] shots were huge.”

With East up 52-50, Marcum hit a runner down the right side of the lane to tie the game and send it to overtime.

“I thought we did a much better job in the fourth quarter and the overtime period of attacking that zone,” said Geron.

It was that attacking style that lead to New Albany pulling away in the extra period.

Marcum got to the free throw line three times, knocking down 4-of-6. A steal by Marcum at halfcourt sealed it.

Marcum went 9-for-15 from the field, 14-of-18 from the free throw line and made two of her three 3-point attempts. She added a team-high six assists and two steals.

Shine finished with 15 points, while Brianne Nixon had four points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who have won two of their last three and three of their last five. Lauren Camm scored six points and Hirsch had five.

Lomax led East with 20 points and Allyson Bunch nearly had a double-double with 18 points and nine boards. Lomax added two steals, while Bunch had a pair of assists.

New Albany hosts Charlestown on Tuesday.
