Clarksville gets second victory in three contests

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — After leading 36-35 at the end of the third quarter, the New Washington girls’ basketball team got outscored 18-8 in the fourth period by Class 3A No. 8 Madison to lose on Tuesday night at Matthews Gymnasium, 53-44.

Ashley Johnson led the Mustangs with 15 points and three assists, followed by teammate Caroline Ricks with 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals. New Washington’s Courtney Amick also had three steals.

“We took some steps forward. However, we did not have more points on the scoreboard than Madison at the end of the fourth quarter,” Mustangs’ assistant coach Kirsti Holloway said. “We need to play every game with the same intensity as we demonstrated this game. We measure success by effort, and in that aspect of the game we were very successful.”

NEXT: New Washington (6-2) at Southwestern, Thursday.

• Generals beat Rock Creek: Host Clarksville picked up its second win in three games on Tuesday with a 50-28 triumph over Rock Creek Community Academy.

Junior center Haley Jenkins paced the Generals with 17 points. Teammate Abigail Hurtgen was the only other Clarksville player in double figures with 12.

“Obviously, anytime you get a win, you’ve got to take it,” Generals’ coach B.D. Ledbetter said. “We didn’t shoot the ball very well. But in the fourth quarter, we finally had a couple go in. We capitalized on some turnovers.”

Sophomore Tabitha Tomaskevitch led the Lions with 10 points.

NEXT: Clarksville (3-5) hosts Brownstown Central, next Tuesday; Rock Creek (0-4) hosts Medora, Thursday.

• Braves pull out win at Salem: Visiting Borden scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to take its first lead of the game at 32-31 and proceeded to defeat Salem on Tuesday, 45-37. The Braves outscored the Lions in the final period, 18-6.

Borden’s Abby Ellis and Shelby Kirchgessner each scored a team-high 12 points. Leslie Beatty chipped in nine.

“We got behind 12-2 in the first quarter, but then gradually caught up with them,” Braves’ coach Terry Rademacher said. “We clamped down on them on defense.”

NEXT: Borden (4-2) at Lanesville, Thursday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

• Warriors defeat West Washington in OT: With six seconds left in overtime, sophomore James Martin hit a 10-foot jumper for the eventual game-winning basket in visiting Christian Academy’s 57-56 victory over West Washington on Tuesday. The Warriors’ Aaron Hayes secured the win by blocking a potential game-winning layup by the Senators at the final buzzer.

Christian Academy senior DeVonta King recorded a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 16 rebounds. Hayes also chipped in a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

NEXT: Christian Academy (3-1) hosts Rock Creek, Friday.
