CHARLESTOWN —
Highlander Youth Recreation’s 11-year-old All-Stars opened District V tournament play by scoring four runs in the first inning and five in the sixth to put away New Albany for a 12-5 victory Saturday at Charlestown Little League Park.
HYR led 5-0 in the third inning and 6-2 in the fourth before New Albany scored two runs in the third and fourth innings and another in the fifth to cut the gap to 7-5.
HYR’s offense, which scored its 12 runs on 14 hits, was led by Noah Franklin, who had a double and a home run and scored three times.
Both of New Albany’s extra-base hits came with back-to-back doubles by Christian Sifers and Dylan Clark during a two-run third inning.
13 BASEBALL
• Late rally gives Creek blowout win in opener: Silver Creek led Jeff GRC 3-1 after four innings before exploding for seven runs in the fifth and eight more in the sixth to win its 13-year-old tournament opener.
James McAfee and Blake Wurm each went 3-for-4 and scored three times apiece for Creek. McAfee had one of three Silver Creek doubles. Brian Campbell and Mason Hall had the others.
Michael Feeler pitched a complete-game five-hitter to pick up the win.
11-12 BASEBALL
• HYR picks up first win: HYR’s 11-12 All-Stars stayed in the hunt to play in the District V title game with a 13-3 win over Charlestown.
HYR scored its 13 runs on 13 hits, including four extra-base hits. Trevor Apple and Sam Weiser each hit doubles, Matt Weimer hit a triple and Noah Jones blasted a home run in the HYR triumph. The bottom four batters in the HYR order – Jones, Apple, Mitchell Bailey and Brenden Nifong – combined to score nine runs. Jones also earned the win on the mound.
For Charlestown, Alec Sipes had an RBI double in the first inning and Courtland Black hit a solo home run in the third. Black scored both of Charlestown’s runs.
13-14 BASEBALL
• Cook silences Clarksville bats: Cameron Cook pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout as Silver Creek won its district opener 10-0 over Clarksville.
Cook, who also went 2-for-3 and scored three times on offense, struck out 14 Clarksville batters in the win.
Brad Haas and Noah Bays each had extra-base hits during Silver Creek’s three-run fifth inning. Haas, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, hit a double while Bays had a triple.
11-12 SOFTBALL
• McAfee unhittable in Creek victory: Alexis McAfee pitched a no-hitter and allowed just one baserunner in Silver Creek’s 10-0 win over Clarksville.
McAfee struck out eight Clarksville batters. She also hit a double and scored a pair of runs on offense.
Dana Shields, Camryn Teague and Kami Pennington also scored two runs apiece for Creek. Shields went 2-for-2 with a double.
• New Albany bats pound Charlestown: New Albany scored 15 runs on 16 hits, including six of the extra-base variety, in a 15-5 win over Clarksville.
Kyrsten Campbell led the charge by going 4-for-4 with a pair of triples and three runs scored. Camri Thomas went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and scored three times. Alyssa Kraemer was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and Brooke Smith went 3-for-3 with a triple and a run for New Albany.
Charlestown’s offense managed five runs on 11 hits. Katie Rhodes was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Erin Kimbrell and Destiny Sparrow each went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run.
