BLOWING IT OPEN: Silver Creek plates 12 runs in second, downs Jeff/GRC 18-2

CHARLESTOWN — The Silver Creek 10-year-old softball team sent 15 batters to the plate in a 12-run second inning and coasted to an 18-2 victory over Jeff/GRC in District V Tournament pool play at the Charlestown Little League Park on Friday.

“I think our girls came out to hit today,” Silver Creek coach Paul Cravens said. “I think every one of them just was ready for what was coming their way. They hit the ball really well, and I was very proud of them.”

The Silver Creek squad led 3-2 heading into the top of the second inning, but built an insurmountable lead with good at-bats and timely hitting, taking advantage of a drawn-in Jeff/GRC outfield.

The big hit of the inning came off the bat with Alisha Harbold. With three runs already across, two on and no one out, Harbold hit a hard liner to left field that got past the fielder and bounced all the way to the fence. Bailey Cravens and Kira Gibson scored easily, while Harbold never slowed down and beat the throw, which came in high.

Jordan Balz kept the inning going with a triple to right, and after Mazden Ragland walked, Adley McMahel drove Balz in.

Jeff/GRC pitching issued four walks during the nine-hit inning.

Jeff’s only runs came in the first inning with two outs. Bailey Cravens started the game in the circle and sandwiched a hit batter with two strikeouts, but an RBI single by Joryn Burns, another hit batter and two straight walks forced Coach Cravens to call Balz to the circle in relief.

Balz looked like she was on her way to issuing another walk to Madison Bush, but the inning came to an end when Kaylee Ellis was stopped at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch.

After the first inning, Jeff’s offense struggled. Balz threw the second and third innings, racking up three strikeouts against two walks. Bailey Cravens returned to the circle in the fourth and struck out the side to end the game.

“Bailey came out and she struggled in the first inning,” Coach Cravens said. “I think the heat got to her a little bit. But then she came back in in the fourth and kind of picked up where she left off. But then Jordan (Balz) kind of settled us in in the second and third innings, kind of carried us through to where we really took the game under control.”

Silver Creek (1-0) will face Clarksville today at 3 p.m. Jeff/GRC (0-1) will take on Scott County today at 5:30 p.m.
