NEW ALBANY —
Ashley Johnson scored 31 points to lead Class A No. 16 New Washington to a 74-35 win over Christian Academy in both teams’ season opener.
Johnson hit five three-point shots in the victory. Kriston Sarver added 17 points and Courtney Amick chipped in with 14 for the Mustangs, who outscored the Warriors 26-6 in the opening quarter.
Allison Burch led CAI with 18 points.
NEXT: New Washington (1-0) at Madison Shawe, Saturday; Christian Academy (0-1) hosts Lanesville, Nov. 15.
• Hornets open with big win: Henryville led host Irvington Prep 41-11 at the half and rolled to a season-opening 72-15 victory.
The contest was also the opener of the Henryville Tipoff Tournament.
Four Hornets scored in double figures, led by Emily Hollis with 19. Haley Huddleston had 12 and Tami Burgin and Lesha Dallas scored 10 apiece.
Henryville coach Josh Conrad praised distributors Chelsea LaMotte and Jasmine Harrell after the win.
“I thought Jasmine and Chelsea did a good job of getting people in the right spots and doing the little things to make the team better,” Conrad said.

• Pioneers cruise to victory: Providence opened the season with a 54-39 win at Crothersville.
The Pioneers, who out-rebounded the Tigers 34-18, led 34-10 at the half and 43-18 after three quarters.
“It was good to get the first win,” Providence coach Brad Burden said. “It was a slow start then we picked it up in the second and third quarters. All-in-all, the kids played hard.”
Meredith Endris paced the Pioneers with 14 points. Lillian Hughes finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
