The Floyd Central boys’ golf team finished second in the Bud Bennett Memorial Invitational (formerly named the Old Capital Invitational) on Saturday at the par-72 Old Capital Golf Club, shooting a team score of 300. The third-ranked Highlanders were seven strokes behind winner Heritage Hills.
Sophomore Jack Sparrow led Floyd Central, placing third in the individual standings with a 1-under-par 71. Also for the Highlanders, Devin Jenkins shot a 75, Daniel Shepard and Jay Holderman each carded a 77 and Alex Beyer had a 78.
New Albany ended up fifth with a team score of 350. Senior Tyler Banet recorded the Bulldogs’ lowest score with a 75. Rounding out the scoring for New Albany were Johnny Smith with an 83, Bret Walts with a 95 and Kunal Bhanushali with a 97. Teammate Braydon Knoy had a 108.
Providence finished in a tie for sixth with Scottsburg with a score of 352. Elliott Happel led the Pioneers with a 79, while Nano Grantz added an 88. Teammates Erich Day and Paxton Schowe fired a 90 and 95, respectively.
Jeffersonville placed with eighth with a 354. Junior Jordan Lacy paced the Red Devils with an 84, followed by Jeff’s Dalton Naiser with an 85. Also for the Red Devils, Zack Lovan had an 88, Dillion Willis scored a 97 and Evan Craig shot a 109.
Henryville wound up 11th with a 399. Senior Evan Embry finished fourth individually with a 2-over 74. Rounding out the scoring for the Hornets were Cody Gray with a 103, Mitchell Fields with a 110 and Cameron Furnish with a 112. Bailey Reister added a 125.
“I thought Evan played well,” Henryville head coach Robin Embry said. “We wanted to shoot 360 or better.”
Clarksville placed 13th with a 516. Generals’ junior Nick Cappola shot a 78. Also for Clarksville, Brent Potter had a 113, Ben Fox shot a 157 and David Hawkins scored a 168.
Floyd Central will play in tournaments at Northfield and Jasper next Saturday. New Albany will play in a triangular meet on Monday at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour against Seymour and Columbus East. Providence will host a quadrangular meet on Monday at Covered Bridge Golf Club against Silver Creek, Christian Academy of Indiana and Lanesville.
Jeff will play in the Big Four tournament on Monday, May 7 at Covered Bridge. Henryville will face Rock Creek Community Academy and South Central in a tri-meet at Chariot Run Golf Club in Laconia on Thursday. Clarksville will host Silver Creek in a dual meet on Thursday at Wooded View Golf Course in Clarksville.
• Providence fourth in BNL Invite: Providence’s “A” team finished fourth in the Bedford North Lawrence Invitational at Otis Park Golf Course in Bedford, firing a team score of 316.
Senior Bryce Very led the Pioneers with an even-par 72, placing him third in the individual standings. Teammate Cory Cahalan shot a 79. Also for Providence, Robert Waiz fired an 81, Max Hupp had an 84 and Mitchell Allender scored an 85.
“It was a great round out of Bryce. He played well,” Pioneers’ head coach Ken Allender said. “Our other guys had potential today, but they let it get away from them. If we keep working, we will be fine.”
SOFTBALL
• Highlanders sweep split twinbill: Class 4A No. 9 Floyd Central went to Bloomington and swept a split doubleheader against Bloomington South and Bloomington North.
Highlander pitcher Morgan Harper tossed a one-hitter in Floyd Central’s 7-0 shutout win over South. Harper struck out three and walked one.
The Highlanders’ Samantha Feather went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Teammate Taylor McClure was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
In the second game, Floyd Central downed North in five innings, 13-1. The Highlanders (19-2) got two hits apiece from McClure, Feather, Harper and Kallie Krammes.
Floyd Central’s Caroline Cato got the win on the mound. In four innings of work, Cato gave up one run (unearned) on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
“Going on the road and playing as well as we did was very encouraging,” Highlanders’ head coach Joe Witten said. “The girls showed a lot of focus.”
Floyd Central will host Brownstown on Monday. It will be the Highlanders’ Senior Night, as the junior varsity game will start at 5:30 and the varsity will begin at about 7:30.
• Sparkman leads Generals past Southwestern: On Friday, Ali Sparkman’s 3-for-4 game lifted host Clarksville past Southwestern, 11-2.
Sparkman collected a double and a triple along with driving in one run. Also for the Generals (7-8), Lex Medlock went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Kayla Wallace was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Clarksville starting pitcher Hannah Heintzman got the victory in a complete-game outing. She allowed two earned runs on two hits, striking out six and walking five.
“Hannah continues to improve,” Generals’ head coach Tim Hauber said.
Clarksville will host Eastern on Thursday.
BASEBALL
• Bulldogs win two at Bosse Field: On Friday, Class 4A No. 7 New Albany won both games of a split doubleheader at Bosse Field in Evansville. The Bulldogs defeated Evansville Bosse in the first game in five innings, 10-0. New Albany then defeated Evansville North in the nightcap, 6-2.
Bulldogs’ starting pitcher Brandon Johnson was the star against Bosse. Johnson pitched a no-hitter, striking out four and walking one. Johnson improved his record to 3-1.
New Albany’s Logan Striegel went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Teammates Garrett Sherrell and Clayton Poff each were 2-for-3. Poff had two doubles and three RBIs.
The biggest inning for the Bulldog offense was the top of the third. New Albany smacked seven consecutive hits at one point as it scored six runs in the frame.
Versus Evansville North, Bulldogs’ starter Josh Rogers went the distance to up his record to 5-0. The junior left-hander gave up one earned run on two hits with 15 strikeouts and three walks.
Sherrell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Striegel drove in two runs.
“We played pretty well in both games,” New Albany head coach Chris McIntyre said. “Obviously, Brandon did an outstanding job in the first game. A no-hitter at Bosse Field is a neat memory he will always have.
“North is having a really good year so we knew we would have to play well to beat them. Josh didn’t have the command that he has had in some other games. But he competed and made pitches to get out of a couple of jams.”
The Bulldogs (15-2) will host Class 3A No. 6 North Harrison on Tuesday.
