JEFFERSONVILLE —
Floyd Central running back Kyle Bramble had all sorts of answers for Jeffersonville Friday night at Blair Field.
Almost everytime the Red Devils scored a touchdown, Bramble responded to their score in a big way.
Bramble rushed for 379 yards on 42 carries and scored six touchdowns — five on the ground and one through the air — in the Highlanders’ 52-42 victory over the Red Devils.
Jeff’s first touchdown came 1 minute and 34 seconds into the game when Austin Hines entered the end zone from 6 yards out.
But two plays switched the Highlanders’ momentum quickly.
At the 7:25 mark of the first quarter, Jeff quarterback Dalton Conway, who also was the punter, leaped up in the air in the end zone to catch the snap. When Conway landed, his foot hit the back line of the end zone, resulting in a Floyd safety.
After the Highlanders (5-0, 3-0 Hoosier Hills Conference) received the free kick, Bramble took the ball on the first play from scrimmage and ran 48 yards for the TD with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter. A running play on the two-point conversion attempt gave Floyd Central an 8-7 lead.
The Red Devils (2-3, 2-2) were knocking on the door to score again on their next series. They used 13 plays to move the ball 59 yards to the Floyd 21-yard line. But on fourth-and-7, Jeff place-kicker Vincent Straight just missed a 39-yard field-goal attempt that landed a few feet short of the crossbar.
For the second straight possession, Bramble needed only one play to hit paydirt again. This time, Bramble snagged a Bryce Smith pass along the right sideline, evaded a Jeff tackler and ran 80 yards for the TD reception.
Following Highlander defensive back Josh Hack’s interception of a Tyler Fridley pass, Floyd marched 41 yards in seven plays with the end result being a 15-yard TD run by Bramble with 11:03 left in the second quarter to up Floyd’s lead to 22-7.
Jeff got within seven points at the 7:31 mark of the second. Conway made an 8-yard TD run and then hit wide receiver Dionte Allen on a fade pattern in the end zone for the two-point conversion to cut the Devils’ deficit to 22-15.
However, once again, Bramble needed one play to answer a Jeff score.
On the first play of the drive, the Highlander back ran up the middle for a 73-yard touchdown to extend Floyd’s lead to 29-15.
Following a Jeff three-and-out, Floyd senior Gus Schoenbaechler capped off a six-play drive with a 46-yard TD reception from Smith to up the Highlander advantage to 36-15.
With 45 seconds left in the first half, Jeff’s Marcus Gray caught a 9-yard TD pass from Conway to cut the Red Devil deficit to 36-21. Jeff failed to convert the two-point conversion on a pass play.
But Floyd had the last laugh of the quarter when kicker Jason VanBuren nailed a 43-yard field goal from the left hash mark as time expired in the half with Floyd up 39-21.
The Red Devils pulled to within 39-27 at the 3:28 mark of the third, as Allen snagged a 7-yard pass from Conway.
But Bramble scored a 1-yard TD run with 11 seconds left in the third to put the Highlanders up 46-27.
After Allen had a 10-yard TD run and Jeff made a two-point conversion with 4:08 left in the fourth, Bramble responded with a 9-yard touchdown run with 59 seconds remaining in regulation to give Floyd a 52-35 lead.
The final TD of the night was a 80-yard TD reception by Jeff’s Tyrone Williams at the 48-second mark of the fourth.
Conway completed 21-of-52 for 395 yards, three touchdown passes and one interception. Allen had 10 receptions for 159 yards, while Williams made three receptions for 111 yards.
Floyd Central will travel to Class 4A No. 7 Columbus East next Friday. Jeff will visit Providence next Friday.
