NEW ALBANY —
IU Southeast shot a sizzling 54 percent from the field in the second half, as it upset undefeated NAIA Division I No. 2 University of the Cumberlands on Friday night at the Southeast Activities Building, 89-74.
The Grenadiers’ Cameron Mitchell led all scorers with 26 points. Kevin Mitchell had 23 points and Haris Batalevic had 20 to lead IU Southeast to the comeback win.
IU Southeast (9-3) trailed 41-32 at the half as Steve Goins dominated the paint for the Patriots and had 15 first-half points. Goins finished with a team-high 21 points and nine rebounds as Cumberlands (12-1) dropped its first game since March 15.
Cameron Mitchell and Batalevic exploded offensively in the second half. Mitchell had 21 points in the final frame and Batalevic had 15. Mitchell was 5-of-6 from 3-point range and Batalevic was 4-of-7 from behind the arc.
The 3-point shot carried the Grenadiers in the second half. They shot 12-of-20 (60 percent) from behind the arc in the second half after only making 3-of-16 treys in the first half.
But it was Kevin Mitchell’s tough drive and layup that gave the Grenadiers the lead for good at 73-72 with 3:53 to play in regulation.
Then the Grenadiers went on a 13-0 run in the final 2 minutes and 10 seconds to put the game out of reach.
IU Southeast will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 22 when it visits Miami-Hamilton at 3 p.m.
