Point Lookout, Mo. — The Indiana University Southeast men’s basketball team advanced to the NAIA Division II Sweet 16 with an easy 77-56 victory over Johnson & Wales (Colo.) on Thursday in Point Lookout, Mo.
“This is a great win for us over a really talented Johnson & Wales team,” IU Southeast coach Wiley Brown said. “Once you get to this point of the year, every team is special.”
After a tight first half, senior guard Alex Gravelle helped the Grenadiers to a 43-36 halftime lead by scoring all 17 of his points in the half, including 4-of-5 from beyond the 3-point line.
Overall, fifth-ranked IU Southeast connected on six of its 14 first-half 3-point attempts.
“We started out slow in the beginning of the game, but we know our defense is our best offense,” Brown said. “Once we started getting our hands on the ball, we were able to start making things happen.”
IU Southeast never trailed in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 34-20 in the second half.
Carlos Mitchell led the Grenadiers with 18 points, and Jazzmarr Ferguson added 14 points, seven assists and five steals.
IU Southeast, which improved to 24-6 with the victory, will face Michigan’s Spring Arbor at 1 p.m. today with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line.
IUS WOMEN FALL IN FIRST ROUND
Jamestown College (N.D.) held Indiana University Southeast’s women to 29 percent shooting and knocked off the Grenadiers in the first round of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship tournament in on Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa, 65-58.
Jamestown, which had 32 points in the paint and 15 second-chance points, outscored the Grenadiers 33-25 in the first half and was able to hold them off in the second.
Ashmere Woods led IU Southeast with 18 points and seven rebounds. Floyds Knobs native Alden Krausse added 10 points and eight boards.
Jamestown had five players with at least eight points, led by Giuli Varriano’s 16. Katie O’Neill had nine points and 11 rebounds for the Jimmies.
IU Southeast, which finished the season 23-9, is now 1-5 all-time in NAIA tournament games.

Highland Hills’ seventh-grade boys and Parkview’s eighth-graders each won Clark-Floyd Tournament championships Thursday at Silver Creek Middle School.
