NEW ALBANY — After two blowout wins to start the season, New Albany’s high-powered offense was shutdown Saturday night at the Doghouse by Corydon

Central. The Panthers handed the Dogs their first loss of the season, 59-48, for their first win at New Albany since 2002.

“Corydon did a great job in executing on both ends of the floor,” Bulldogs head coach Tammy Geron said. “They really took us out of what we wanted to do. We got in a little foul trouble and that limited us a little on what we want to do.”

New Albany (2-1) found scoring to be tough early and didn’t get on the board until a Lauren Camm triple at 4:09 in the first period. The Bulldogs, however, held Corydon (3-0) to 3 of 13 shooting in the opening frame and clawed their way to a 9-6 lead at the first stop.

Then the Panthers defense took over.

The visitors proceeded to hold New Albany to 0 of 11 second period shooting and grabbed control of the game with a 20-12 advantage at intermission. The Bulldogs had nine turnovers and made just three field goals in the first half.

“I think we in more of a funk defensively more than offensively,” Geron said. “Our kids know this: IF we’re not getting it done on that end of the floor, it’s not going to get done because that’s who we are. We looked tired tonight. We didn’t bring the energy to the floor that it takes to be successful.”

Corydon continued its first half momentum and pushed its lead to 35-20 on a Taylor Frederick basket with 1:58 to go in the third. Then the hosts made their final run. New Albany ripped off an 11-0 spurt that carried into the final period and pulled them within 35-31 with 5:51 remaining in the game. That would be as close as the home team would get the rest of the way.

“I think our tank was pretty empty at that point,” Geron said. “I don’t think we had enough to get over the hump. We did a good job battling back and I’m proud of our kids for that. When we cut it to four we needed to get even more focused. You need to dig really deep to do that and hopefully that’s something we will learn as time goes on.”

The Bulldogs woke up on offense in the second half, shooting 56 percent from the field over the final two quarters. Corydon, who placed three players in double figures, answered that number with stellar rebounding as they dominated the glass to a 36-21 tune. The Panthers fended off any late New Albany run by hitting 15 of 19 free throws in the final frame.

“We didn’t have much chemistry on the floor tonight,” Geron said. “We were standing around a lot. We didn’t do what we needed to do on offense to get everyone involved.”

New Albany’s next game is Nov. 29 at North Harrison.
