CHARLESTOWN — Floyd Central used a huge third quarter to turn a close game into snoozer at Charlestown on Senior Night. The Highlanders outscored the Pirates 25-11 in the third as a game tied at halftime turned into a convincing 67-48 Floyd victory.

The Highlanders (10-12) shot 10-of-13 in the third frame en route to their fourth straight win over Charlestown.

“At halftime I asked how many times did we reverse the ball. Tanner (Wortham) answered ‘zero’ and he was right,” Floyd head coach Randy Gianfagna said. “In the third we reversed the ball, got some buckets in transition, and used Jordan (Thompson) more. We got some layups and Nick (Bomersbach) stuck some 3s for us too.”

Bomersbach pumped in 10 of his game-high 30 in the decisive third stanza and poured in four triples  on the night.

“They made some really nice adjustments on both ends of the floor,” Pirates head coach Sean Smith said. “Kendall (Thompson) had a real nice first half, and they took him away in the second half and that hurt us. They shot the ball extremely well in the third quarter. At the end of the day they just kicked out butt in that third quarter and that was the ballgame.”

Early, the Pirates had their offense in gear as the hosts hit three from long range in the opening frame, including Chris Braun's triple at the first period horn, and led 19-14 at the first stop.

“The first quarter they got 19 points, so that's not very good defense on our part,” Gianfagna said. “We were very impatient on offense as well.”

Charlestown (10-10), which hasn't beaten Floyd since 2008, pushed its lead to 24-17 on a Thompson basket at 5:55 in the second. The Highlanders responded with a 10-3 run to end the first half tied at 27-27.

“We were moving the ball well,” Smith said of the first half, particularly the first period. “We got some open looks and knocked them down. Kendall was able to attack the basket off the dribble and broke them down.”

Bomersbach netted 15 of his team's 27 first-half points as no other Highlander scored more than four points in the first 16 minutes.

“Nick took good shots tonight,” Gianfagna said. “He's figured that out. When he takes good shots he's tough to beat.”

Floyd shot 65 percent to Charlestown's 25 percent in the second half. Each team placed three players in double figures. Quinton Miller tallied 14 and Jordan Thompson added 10 for Floyd Central. The Pirates were led by Braun's 16, while David Cissell had 11 and Tyler Odle chipped in 10.

“Give them all the credit,” Smith said. “They played a great second half. They played a great third quarter and wanted it a little more than we did. Floyd's a quality team that will get us ready for the sectional. If we can compete with them then obviously I feel like we can compete with anyone in our sectional.”

The Highlanders’ next game is Tuesday at 6 p.m. versus arch rival New Albany in the opening game of the Class 4A Seymour Sectional. The Pirates next hit the hardwood Wednesday night at approximately 7:45 p.m. versus Corydon Central in the Class 3A Salem Sectional.
