Indiana girls fall despite effort of Vogen, SC duo

LOUISVILLE — Darryl Baker and Keenan Williams combined for 46 points as Indiana defeated Kentucky, 103-87 Saturday in the 15th annual “Battle of the Bridges” at the Mid-America Sports Center in Louisville.

“The Indiana team was athletic and they played together as a team, even though they had only a few practices together,” said Gary Darby, whose Team Hoops puts the event together each year. “If this was any indication of how things are going to go in Southern Indiana [basketball], then I think they [coaches] at Jeffersonville and the surrounding areas are going to be very proud of their teams.”

Indiana, which also got 15 points from Most Valuable Player Bryce Leinhoop of Columbus East, led the entire way.

“Even though Leinhoop was the MVP because of his dominance on the boards, Baker and Williams were consistent throughout the game,” Darby said. “Each of those young men could have been the most valuable player.”

Myles Harvey, also from Jeff, added six points, while Charlestown’s Justin Conrad and Clarksville’s D.J. Coleman each scored two.

Despite 22 points from MVP Haley Vogen, the Indiana girls fell 70-67 to the Kentucky stars. The Silver Creek combination of Alexis McFarland and Carissa Brown combined for 25 points, while Jeff’s Shae Hines added 11.

Indiana was undone by an 11-for-22 performance at the free throw line.

“Indiana fought hard,” Darby said. “It was a fantastic ball game.”

Other area players were Silver Creek’s Kelsi Scott (four points), Charlestown’s Jessica Farmer (three), Justice Burdin (two) and Kaitlynn Henning (two), and New Washington’s Courtney Amick, who went scoreless.
