> SOUTHERN INDIANA — For the fourth time this season, New Albany let a lead slip away.

This time it was a 55-54 loss at Evansville Reitz, a game in which the Bulldogs led 42-28 after scoring the first 14 points of the third quarter.

“We keep doing this to ourselves,” New Albany coach Jim Shannon said.

After Mario Barnes hit two free throws with 17.8 seconds left to give the Panthers a 55-54 lead, New Albany appears to win the game when Josh Rogers hit a shot in the final seconds.

However, Rogers was called for traveling. It was the last of many calls Shannon called questionable.

“There were about 2,000 bad calls,” he said. “It’s tough to play 5-on-8, it really is. But if you allow the officials to decide things, this is what happens.”

Reitz took an early 8-2 lead, but the Bulldogs tied it at 10-apiece by the end of the first quarter and led 15-11 early in the second quarter.

The Panthers responded with a 17-10 run before Jermaine Parrish hit a half-court shot to tie the game at 28 at intermission.

Anthony Edwards, who had a game-high 19 points, scored 10 points in the third quarter and keyed the 14-0 run.

“He played really well,” Shannon said of Edwards.

Reitz pulled within 49-47 late, but Parrish hit his second of back-to-back 3s to put the Bulldogs up 52-47 with 2:22 left.

Down the stretch, turnovers plagued New Albany and the Panthers hit seven of their eight free throw attempts to improve to 7-3.

Parrish finished with 13 points and Leondre McBirth added 11 for New Albany. Alex Stine led Reitz with 13 points and Barnes had 10 off of the bench.

New Albany (4-4) goes to Jeffersonville on Friday.

• Borden beats Paoli at buzzer: Jalen McCoy hit a floater in the lane with 4.9 seconds left to give Class A No. 3 Borden its “best win” of the season, 67-66 at Paoli on Friday.

“That was by far our best win of the year,” Borden coach Doc Nash said of his 8-0 squad. “It was a physical game and we had to grind it out in the end. That will be good for us.”

McCoy’s shot also gave Nash his 100th career coaching victory.

“You have to have good kids, that’s how you get to 100,” Nash said.

Billy Kirchgessner led the Braves with 21 points and McCoy finished with 16. Tanner Wroblewski’s 17 and Garrett Strange’s 15 led the way for Paoli.

• New Wash goes 1-1 at Union County: New Washington will play for fifth place at the Union County Tournament on Saturday after going 1-1 in Friday’s action.

The host Patriots outscored the Mustangs 33-20 in the second half to pull away with a 62-44 victory in the opener.

In the second game of the day, New Wash rebounded with a 61-54 victory over Indiana Math & Science to improve to 4-4 on the season.

Ian Hughes had 23 points and nine boards and Tim Cochran added 13 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. Cochran also led the Mustangs with 11 points in the loss to Union County.

“Those two guys had very solid games, the numbers looked really good,” New Wash coach Jonathan May said. “But they’re capable of more. We expect more from those guys.”
