BASKETBALL: Bulldogs keep on rolling, defeat Harrison
The Christmas holiday did not slow down the New Albany boys’ basketball team at all on Saturday night at Evansville Harrison.
The Class 4A No. 6 Bulldogs increased their regular-season winning streak to 29 games with a 69-57 victory over the Warriors.
New Albany junior Donnie Hale had another big night. The 6-foot-7 center posted a double-double, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.
Hale’s frontcourt mate, Brett Martin, also had a productive night with 19 points. Bulldog senior guard TeNale Roland scored 16.
“They couldn’t stop our interior game. Brett Martin did a nice job for us. Brett stepped out and shot some shots and made some nice drives,” New Albany head coach Jim Shannon told WKRD-AM after the contest. “We’re just tickled to get out of here with a victory because I knew this was going to be a tough test.”
The Bulldogs’ defense and rebounding were impressive. Harrison (5-1) shot 21-of-57 from the field (37 percent) and 4-of-20 from 3-point range (20 percent). The Bulldogs rarely used their vaunted full-court pressure during the game against a very athletic Harrison squad.
New Albany outrebounded the Warriors, 38-23. Shannon gave lots of kudos to his defense afterwards.
“In a full-court situation, I think that team really hurts us with their speed. That’s the first team we’ve played all year that they beat us up and down the floor,” Shannon said. “I really think our defense is ahead of where our defense was last year — I really do. I think we’re quicker.”
Shannon lauded the overall play of his two point guards — Chris Whitehead and Jordy Martin — who combined to score nine points.
“I thought they both played really hard tonight, and they got the ball to Donnie when they needed to,” Shannon said.
New Albany shot 29-of-55 from the field (53 percent), including 14-of-24 in the second half. The Bulldogs will visit archrival Jeffersonville on Friday, Jan. 9.
