Down one point in overtime to Evansville North, New Albany Kayton Cole missed a potential game-winning shot in the lane. However, the junior followed her miss, got the rebound and put the ball in the basket as the buzzer sounded, giving the Bulldogs a 58-57 season-opening victory over the Huskies.
With 20 seconds to play, North’s Ashley Klass hit her second 3-point shot of the game to give North a 57-56 lead.
Cole led all scorers with 25 points, including three 3-point shots. Her sister, sophomore Kameron, added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
The key to the win, besides the play of the Coles, was a strong second period when New Albany outscored the Huskies 14-5 to take a 25-21 halftime lead.
“We pressed the whole game,” New Albany coach Amanda Carmichael said. “We really wore them down in the second quarter and got a lot of points off of our press.”
Giorgia Stringer led North with 16 points. For New Albany, Jensen Ricke scored eight and Samantha Pitts and Anjelica Groves added six apiece.
New Albany is off for a week. The Bulldogs will go to Corydon Central next Saturday.
