On any team, seniors are expected to step up in the clutch throughout the course of a season.
On Saturday night at Corydon, Tate Rohlfing did that for the New Albany boys’ basketball team.
Rohlfing scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Class 4A No. 3 Bulldogs defeat the host Panthers, 63-45. For the game, the 6-foot-4 wingman poured in 19 points.
With New Albany leading 43-39 at the start of the fourth, Rohlfing hit a 3-pointer, drew a foul and rolled in a free throw to complete the four-point play, putting the Bulldogs (3-1) up eight points.
Rohlfing then nailed another 3 to extend the New Albany advantage to 50-39.
“Tate has been slowly but steadily coming to the forefront,” New Albany head coach Jim Shannon told WKRD-AM after the game. “You’ve got to let the kids play through it. If you play hard, shots will fall.”
The 18-point final margin was the highest the Bulldogs’ lead got.
Purdue signee Donnie Hale paced the Bulldogs with 21 points, while teammate Chris Whitehead chipped in 10. Hale scored 12 points in the first half.
New Albany scored the first 10 points of the game and led 22-12 after the first period. The Bulldogs were up 30-22 at halftime.
New Albany shot 49 percent from the field (22-of-45) and 70 percent from the free-throw line (14-of-20). The Bulldogs also outrebounded the Panthers, 37-12. Corydon (2-1) shot just 39 percent from the floor.
Casey Saulman paced the Panthers with 11 points. New Albany will host Seymour on Friday.
“There is a lot of ball still left to be played, and we are getting a lot of good minutes out of some really good kids,” Shannon said.
