The Floyd Central volleyball team won the second and third sets against Seymour on Tuesday. But the Owls won the final two sets to upset the 10th-ranked Highlanders in a matchup of Hoosier Hills Conference squads, 25-16, 25-27, 21-25, 26-24, 15-13.
Jennifer Smith led Floyd with 15 kills, and Rachel Engle added 13. Kyndall Merritt paced the Highlanders’ defense with 28 digs.
The Highlanders will be back in action on Thursday at home against Bedford North Lawrence.
• Providence downs Presentation Academy: Providence beat Presentation Academy (Ky.) in straight sets — 25-16, 27-25 — at the Robert I. Larkin Center to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Lindsay Calahan led Providence with eight digs. Ashley Ricks had a team-best four kills, followed by Calahan and Mary Beth Mattingly with three apiece.
Abby Spitznagel led the Pioneers with 17 assists, and Kattie Kochert added six digs and eight service points.
“We tried a new lineup in tonight’s match that we felt puts us in the best position possible this week to be successful,” Providence coach Terri Purichia said. “We have a very intense week of competition ahead of us, so I was really pleased with how the changes we made worked. We had a good flow tonight, especially defensively.
“This win felt good for our team. I am very proud of them for a great effort tonight. They really needed it.”
The Pioneers host Louisville powerhouse Mercy Academy today at the Larkin Center.
• Austin sweeps Clarksville: Austin defeated Clarksville in straight sets, 25-20, 25-9, 25-14. No match details were provided.
The Generals will host North Harrison on Thursday.
