MITCHELL —
After surrendering a first-quarter touchdown and trailing 6-0, the Providence football team scored 50 unanswered points to thump host Mitchell, 50-6.
The Pioneers (2-1) rushed for 457 yards, with senior running back Spencer Corrao leading the way with 176 yards on 21 carries. Corrao also had a pair of touchdown runs.
Providence junior Zack Johnson ran for 131 yards on nine rushes and two touchdowns. Pioneer quarterback Anthony Denis scampered for 79 yards thanks to two TD runs.
Denis’ first touchdown came in the first quarter from 63 yards, putting the Pioneers up 7-6.
Corrao followed in the second with a 45-yard run to make the score 14-6. After a Providence safety, Corrao hit paydirt again with a 30-yard TD run to extend the advantage to 23-6. Denis capped off the opening half with a 16-yard run to put the Pioneers up 24 points at halftime.
Johnson’s two scores were in the third quarter. He had a 67-yard TD run, followed by a 35-yard scoring scamper to put Providence up 43-6. The Pioneers’ final touchdown came in the fourth on a 60-yard run by freshman Owen Mattingly.
The Providence defense held Mitchell to 139 total yards, all coming on the ground, and intercepted two passes.
The Pioneers will host Indian Creek next Friday.
