NEW ALBANY — Floyd Knobs Elementary doubled up on the fun Tuesday night in the finals of the Floyd County Elementary School League Tournament.
After seeing the school’s girls’ hoops squad cap off a perfect season with a win over Grant Line Elementary, Floyd Knobs completed a season-long sweep in the boys’ game — beating Mount Tabor in the title game, 32-16.
“We put in the practice and hard work every day all season long,” said Floyds Knobs coach Bill Wilbert, who coached both teams to perfect 9-0 seasons. “I told them tonight, come out and give 100 percent one last time and and see what happens.
“We put in the hard work — now it’s time to go party.”
After a close first half that saw Floyd Knobs lead just 10-9 at intermission, the Cougars roared out of the gate in the third with an 8-1 run that helped put the game on ice.
Isaac Hibbard, the son of New Albany Floyd County superintendent Bruce Hibbard, led Floyd Knobs with 10 points. Trevor Apple added six in the victory.
“If these guys stay together, they’ll be something else to watch,” Wilbert said. “This is a heck of a group of basketball players.”
Romeo Langford had 10 in the loss for Mount Tabor.
GIRLS
Floyds Knobs scored 12 points in the opening quarter en route to 22-13 victory over Grant Line.
Gracey Fitzgerald was the top scorer on the night for Floyds Knobs, who also got four from Emma Pappas.
“We had a great year start to finish,” Wilbert said. “To be here with both teams tonight is something else.”
Paige Schindler scored four in the loss for Grant Line.
