FLOYDS KNOBS — Floyd Central placed four players in double figures, led by Drew Hussung’s career high 20 points, and defeated Silver Creek 55-50 Saturday night at Highlander Gymnasium.

The Highlanders, who have now beaten the Dragons six straight times, trailed 35-32 after three quarters but held the visitors to 3 of 16 shooting in the final period to secure their first win of the season.

“Do we have things to improve upon? Yes, but we’re glad to get this win,” Floyd head coach Randy Gianfagna said. “Our press break wasn’t that great tonight, but we had sophomores step up. Drew played like a senior down the stretch, and Codie [Hamsley] was huge. I thought everybody contributed.”

Both teams shot the ball well early and a Zach Davidson 3 gave Creek a 14-8 lead at 3:36 in the first frame. The Highlanders responded with a 10-2 run to finish the opening stanza, capped by a Hussung triple at the buzzer for an 18-16 lead.

“It was a game of runs. Early on they were hitting everything and then we finished off the [first] quarter well,” Gianfagna said.

After a hot shooting first quarter, the Creekers went cold in the second. The Dragons, who shot just 32 percent overall, didn’t score until a Layne Taylor bucket with 3:44 left until halftime. Floyd extended its lead to as big as nine, but a 6-1 Creek run in the final minute of the half pulled them within 26-24 going to the locker room.

“At halftime we talked about how it was a game of runs and that those things will happen and to just hang in there,” Gianfagna said.

After shooting 57 percent in the first half, the Highlanders went cold in the third period, shooting just 2 of 11 as Creek seemed to take control.

Lucas Barnett’s second 3 gave the Dragons their first lead since the first period at 34-31 with 1:36 left in the third. Creek maintained that three point advantage heading to the final period.

The fourth quarter saw a lid placed on the Dragons’ basket as Floyd clawed its way back to the lead. Colton’s Kimm’s putback bucket with 4:46 remaining gave the home team a 42-41 lead that it would not relinquish. Creek hit just 3 of 16 fourth quarter shots and Hussung hit 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch to secure Floyd’s first win of the season.

“Drew acted like a senior and finished it off like he’s supposed to,” Gianfagna said of Hussung, who score eight of his game-high 20 in the final frame.

Hamsley tossed in 14 for the Highlanders and Kimm added 10. Jackson Logsdon added 10 off the bench and hit two of his game leading three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

“I told our kids I was proud of them for some key little things they did,” Gianfagna said. “Maturity like that for a young team is really big for us. Logsdon hit some big shots for us. One three to keep us in it and another to give us the lead when it was tied late. We want him to shoot it.”

Gabe Bauer paced Creek with 12 while Zach Davidson added 10, including two 3-pointers.

Floyd’s next game is this Friday at New Albany. Silver Creek is also back in action this Friday when it travels to North Harrison.
