Kyle Bramble’s four-touchdown effort in a win against Providence last week turned out to be just a warm-up for the Floyd Central tailback.
The junior notched four touchdowns in the first half against Madison in the Highlanders’ Hoosier Hills Conference opening 31-6 win Friday night at Ron Weigleb Stadium. After punching in a 4-yard touchdown early, Bramble rambled up the Cubs’ (0-3, 0-1 HHC) sideline for a 96-yard score on Floyd Central’s second possession, setting what is believed to be a school record.
Bramble added touchdown runs of 67 and 76 yards in the second quarter, and the matchup was virtually over by the half. He carried the ball just 13 times, but ran for 287 yards through the hapless Madison defense and spent most of the second half on the sidelines.
Still, Floyd Central coach Brian Glesing said his squad was a little complacent in spots, missing some opportunities to score in the second half and not completely putting the Cubs away.
“Madison came out fighting, and obiviously we had the best player on the field tonight in Bramble,” Glesing said. “Take him out of the game, and it’s a different story, right? I think early on, we did what we needed to do, but we just didn’t have the killer instinct.”
Madison gained more first downs in the first half (nine to six) than the Highlanders (2-1, 1-0), and beat the hosts on time of possession by nearly eight minutes before intermission.
Floyd Central was always able to do just enough to stop Madison from scoring, with the Highlanders halting a 13-play, 46-yard drive on their 20-yard line when Jay Frazier’s pass attempt to Ethan Weber was incomplete on fourth down early in the second quarter.
Junior Joey Quinkert sacked Frazier three times for the Highlanders, and early in the third quarter Shane Sneed wrapped up Madison tailback Ryan Fish in the Madison end zone for a safety.
The Highlanders limited the Cubs to 179 yards of total offense and forced them into two turnovers.
“We did a little bit better on defense,” Glesing said. “But we’ve got to get a lot better for when we go up against Columbus East, New Albany, Bedford and those teams.”
The Cubs did manage to score a touchdown early in the third quarter when Frazier connected with 6-foot-4 tight end Geoff Halverson for a 17-yard pass.
Floyd Central will travel to Seymour next week to face the Owls in another Hoosier Hills Conference matchup.
