HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Bramble scores for four TDs in Floyd’s 45-21 win

Jeff suffer 28-21 setback at Bedford

MADISON —  

Senior running back Kyle Bramble ran for four touchdowns to lead the Floyd Central football team past host Madison Friday, 45-21. It was the Hoosier Hills Conference opener for both teams.

Bramble began the Highlander scoring at the 2:59 mark of the first quarter with a 29-yard touchdown run to put Floyd up 7-0. Two minutes and 10 seconds later, the Highlanders’ Matt Rue returned a punt 70 yards for a score to extend the lead to 14-0.

Following an 18-yard TD run by the Cubs’ Ryan Fish, Bramble entered the end zone for a second time with a 4-yard TD scamper with 1:24 left in the second quarter. 

Floyd Central then got a lot of momentum heading into halftime when Josh Hack intercepted a Madison pass and returned the ball 52 yards for a score with 34 seconds remaining in the half, giving the Highlanders (3-0) a 28-7 lead at intermission.

Bramble needed only 64 seconds at the beginning of the second half to hit paydirt again. He ran 91 yards for a TD to up Floyd’s lead to 35-7. At the 7:09 mark of the third quarter, place-kicker Jason VanBuren nailed a 36-yard field goal to put the Highlanders up 38-7.

With Floyd holding a 38-14 advantage with 11:34 left in regulation, Bramble scored his final TD of the night on a 20-yard scamper.

The Highlanders will host Seymour next Friday. Madison’s record dropped to 1-2.

• Red Devils fall at Bedford: Visiting Jeffersonville evened its record at 1-1 in the HHC with a 28-21 setback at Bedford North Lawrence.

Red Devil senior quarterback Dalton Conway had a productive night behind center. Conway completed 17-of-36 passes for 254 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Conway’s favorite target was sophomore wide receiver Dionte Allen, who made six receptions for 138 yards and one TD. Sophomore Austin Hines was Jeff’s leading rusher, gaining 52 yards on 12 carries.

After the Stars began the game with an 82-yard kickoff return for a score by Nik Bailey, the Red Devils (1-2) answered with a 50-yard TD catch by Tyrone Williams from Tyler Fridley at the 10:32 mark of the opening quarter.

Allen gave Jeff its lone lead of the game with 3:22 left in the first. He snagged a 51-yard TD pass from Conway to put the Devils up 13-7.

But Bedford (2-1, 1-0 HHC) got three consecutive touchdown runs by Jay Thomas, Kole Korvella and Jade Daab to give the Stars a 28-13 lead with 2:48 left in the third quarter.

Senior wideout J.R. Gandara scored Jeff’s final TD of the contest, receiving a 18-yard toss from Conway when time ran out in the third. On their final drive, the Red Devils drove the ball down to the Bedford 41-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs to end the game.

Thomas rushed the ball 19 times for 115 yards. Jeff will visit Madison next Friday.

• Dragons fall at Corydon: Silver Creek fell to 0-3 with a 54-33 loss at Class 3A No. 6 Corydon (3-0, 2-0 Mid-Southern Conference). 

The Dragons (0-2 MSC) trailed 42-12 at halftime, but managed to score 21 points in the second half against the Panthers’ tough defense. No other details were given on the game at press time.

Silver Creek will face Eastern (Pekin) next Friday.

 

VOLLEYBALL

• Braves earn SAC victory: Borden picked up a Southern Athletic Conference victory, defeating visiting South Central 25-7, 25-7, 25-10.

Senior Erin Mikel was the Braves’ top hitter with 14 kills. Fellow senior Allison Rademacher had six kills and six service aces for Borden.

“We did a lot of things well tonight,” Braves’ head coach D.J. Zipp said. “Our defensive rotation was better. Our serve-receive was much better. We had a nice crowd tonight. It’s good to get a conference win under our belt. Erika Frascella had an all-around great match tonight.”
