> SOUTHERN INDIANA — BROWNSTOWN CENTRAL AT CHARLESTOWN

• TIME: 7 p.m.

• PLACE: Dutch Reis Field.

• RECORDS: Charlestown 1-0, 0-0 Mid-Southern Conference; Brownstown 1-0, 0-0.

• SERIES RECORD: Brownstown leads 22-21.

• SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Brownstown leads 10-3.

• LAST MEETING: Aug. 26, 2011 at Blevins Stadium — Brownstown 36, Charlestown 31.

• KEY FACTS: The Pirates were one point shy of tying the school record for most points in a game in their 67-14 victory at Madison last Friday. The current mark of 68 points was set on Sept. 12, 2008 at Eastern, 68-0. Charlestown also scored 67 points last season in a 49-point win over Silver Creek. … At least a share of the MSC championship has gone to either the Pirates or the Braves the past five seasons. Brownstown, which has a 17-game MSC-winning streak, has won two outright conference titles in a row. Prior to that championship streak, Charlestown claimed the MSC title three straight years from 2007-09. The 2007 and 2009 crowns were outright titles.

• MATCHUP TO WATCH: Pirate quarterback Aaron Daniel vs. Brownstown’s defense — Daniel accumulated 314 total yards, ran for three touchdowns and threw for another score in Charlestown’s loss at Brownstown last season. The Braves must find a way to contain the Charlestown QB in a critical early-season showdown in the MSC title race.

FLOYD CENTRAL AT PROVIDENCE

• TIME: 7:30 p.m.

• PLACE: Murphy Stadium.

• RECORDS: Floyd Central 0-1, Providence 0-1.

• SERIES RECORD: Floyd Central leads 22-18.

• SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Floyd Central leads 6-4.

• LAST MEETING: Aug. 26, 2012 at Ron Weigleb Stadium — Floyd Central 49, Providence 21.

• KEY FACTS: Floyd Central coach Brian Glesing is 7-1 in his career against the Pioneers. He was 3-0 versus Providence when he coached at Clarksville from 2005-06, followed by a 4-1 mark against the Pioneers since he took the Highlanders’ helm. Glesing’s lone setback to Providence happened during his first season at Floyd Central in 2007, 26-14. … The Pioneers’ four-game losing streak in their rivalry with the Highlanders is the longest losing skid in the series for Providence since it dropped 10 straight matchups from 1986-1998. During that span, the teams squared off from 1986-1994, took a break in the series from 1995-97 and then resumed their rivalry in 1998.

• MATCHUP TO WATCH: Floyd Central’s offensive line vs. Providence’s defense — The Highlanders have some experience on their O-line with four returning starters and good size. The Pioneers have only three returning defensive starters and must use their quickness on defense to wear down Floyd Central’s line.

JEFFERSONVILLE AT SEYMOUR

• TIME: 7 p.m.

• PLACE: Bulleit Stadium.

• RECORDS: Jeff 0-1, 0-0 Hoosier Hills Conference; Seymour 0-1, 0-0.

It was the longest TD run by a Jeff quarterback in school history. … The Owls have won eight of their 15 meetings with the Red Devils since they joined the HHC in 1997. But Jeff has had the upper hand in the series as of late, prevailing in six of the last nine matchups.

• MATCHUP TO WATCH: Seymour’s offense vs. the Red Devils’ defense — The Owls committed five turnovers in their 28-21 overtime loss to Franklin last week. The Red Devils must use their quickness and athleticism on defense to try to force Seymour into more miscues this week.

CASTLE AT NEW ALBANY

• TIME: 8 p.m.

• PLACE: Buerk Field.

• RECORDS: New Albany 1-0, Castle 1-0.

• SERIES RECORD: Castle leads 9-7-1.

• SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Castle leads 8-1.

• LAST MEETING: Oct. 21 at Castle Stadium, Class 5A, Sectional 8 first round — Castle 56, New Albany 7.

• KEY FACTS: The Bulldogs’ last victory over the Knights was on Aug. 27, 2010 at Buerk Field, 31-22. Prior to that game, New Albany’s last win against Castle was in 1992. … The Bulldogs turned their fortunes around in rivalry games last week by defeating Providence, 28-15. In the past three seasons, New Albany has a 3-9 record versus its three main rivals — the Pioneers, Jeff and Floyd Central.

• MATCHUP TO WATCH: New Albany running back Tuwan Payton vs. Castle’s defense — Payton rushed for 228 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ triumph last week. Can the junior put together another great performance against a Knights defense that allowed a grand total of seven points in its two games last season against New Albany?

• RECORDS: Clarksville 0-1, 0-0 MSC; Eastern 0-1, 0-0.

• LAST MEETING: Aug. 26, 2011 at Clarksville — Clarksville 20, Eastern 19.

• KEY FACTS: Clarksville suffered its fifth consecutive loss in a season opener last Friday at Southridge, 48-14. … The Musketeers have gone 6-7 in MSC play the past two seasons. During their first three seasons of existence, they had a 1-17 record in conference games. Eastern got rewarded its one victory in that span by forfeit.

• MATCHUP TO WATCH: Clarksville kick returner Marquise Parrish vs. Eastern’s special teams — Parrish scored both of the Generals’ touchdowns last week off of kick returns. One TD return went 65 yards and another was for 95. The Musketeers’ special teams need to be cognizant of Parrish’s location at all times.

SILVER CREEK AT SALEM

• TIME: 7 p.m.

• PLACE: Paul Graves Field.

• RECORDS: Silver Creek 0-1, 0-0 MSC; Salem 0-1, 0-0.

• SERIES RECORD: Salem leads 2-0.

• SERIES LAST 10 YEARS: Salem leads 2-0.

• LAST MEETING: Oct. 21, 2011 at Paul Graves Field, Class 3A, Sectional 23 — Salem 29, Silver Creek 21.

• KEY FACTS: The Lions are the only MSC opponent that Silver Creek has played twice since it began playing conference games last season. Along with their first-round sectional loss, the Dragons suffered a 45-27 setback at Salem in the second game of the 2011 campaign. … Silver Creek’s 29 points in its 17-point loss to Springs Valley last week marked the fifth consecutive game it has scored more than 20 points. The last time the Dragons tallied below 20 points was in a 44-18 loss on Sept. 23, 2011 at Clarksville.

• MATCHUP TO WATCH: Silver Creek quarterback Brooks Howell vs. Salem’s defense — In last year’s sectional matchup, Howell passed for 305 yards on 21-of-33 passing. Howell needs to duplicate that effort if he wants to give the Dragons that coveted first victory.
