SEYMOUR —
For the second straight season, Floyd Central’s season came to an end at the hands of host Seymour in Class 4A Sectional 8.
This time, the ninth-ranked Owls defeated the Highlanders 25-22, 14-25, 25-23, 25-18 in the sectional semifinals.
“Seymour playing on their home court helps a lot,” Floyd coach Bart Powell said. “And they’re good.”
After “coming out nervous” in the first set, the Highlanders (21-13) looked like maybe they would pull an upset with a 25-14 second-set victory.
“Obviously, we were a little nervous in Game 1,” Powell said. “In Game 2, we pounded them.”
That set up a crucial third set. The Owls took the early advantage, but Floyd got within 20-19.
“I knew at that moment, whoever got that game was going to win the match,” Powell said.
Seymour (32-4) took five of the final nine points for a 25-23 win and a crucial 2-1 advantage.
“We just needed to win Game 3,” Powell said.
A deflated Highlander squad let Seymour take a huge lead to open the fourth set. Floyd Central made a small charge, but the Owls pulled away to advance to Saturday’s championship game and eventually the sectional title.
“We just completely lost momentum in the fourth,” Powell said. “We weren’t fighting back like we should have.”
Powell said one reason his team failed to fight often this season was its youth. Sophomore Remi Bowman led the Highlanders with 49 assists and six blocks. Classmate Hannah Joly had a Floyd-best 14 kills. Junior Sydney
“We played a lot of young kids,” Powell said. “For us, against the schedule we play, we had a really successful year. I don’t know if the schedule took a toll on us, but in the long run, it’s only going to make us better.”
Powell and the Highlanders say goodbye to seniors Jordan Alvey, Morgan Cambron and Sarah Engle.
